I don't know if this is the right forum, but a little red x keeps appearing at the bottom of my screen and saying that I need new Malware protection, so I clicked it and it asked me to search for new programs.

I did and it showed a selection, one was McAfee, which I already have and use. So why is Windows telling me I need a new one and my computer isn't protected?

It also said I shouldn't select another one as more than one anti-virus thing can mess with the computer.

Maybe it needs updating but if you're sure that you're sorted for it then go to
Control Panel > Security Centre then on the sidebar click "Change the way security centre alerts me" and uncheck the one that's giving you the notification.

You can run separate security programs as long as they are designed for different things, such as running a firewall using e.g nod32, antivirus with avg, anti-spyware with spyware doctor and so on, because they all have different uses, but using more than one program that does the same job can mess with your computer due to the memory heuristic tools used by each application getting confused with each other.

As for why windows is telling you what it is, ensure that all your security programs are completely up to date with the latest definitions available. And also ensure that you do indeed have the right settings in the windows security centre, all the security centre does is monitor the programs you install to do certain things like a firewall. So you need to ensure that , in the case of the firewall that mcafee is selected, and that windows firewall is turned off.
