Some of them actually prefer living that life. No pressures of society, the fear of being unsucessful, keeping up their body, no bills, no annoying family members... You should watch that documentary about the homeless man being given $100,000.

"sad worthless lives" is pinpointing how you view them, and your desire not to give to them is based on that rather than spoiling people and making them reliant.
Truth is, while many were too lazy or stupid to do good, many also were just dealt bad luck. Some even are in that place because of doing good. I don't think handing out cash is the answer, I think there needs to be funds for a massive program to rehabilitate them into society because many are unable to work in their current state.
