Yesterday I did out my college application form and everything just came me to me. I'll be starting college come September. I don't know...I'm really worrying about it. I'm scared  terrified I won't like it even though I'm doing a course I'm really interested in and have been since I was 14 years old. Its not because I'm unsure about the course. Its everything else!

I can just picture it now. The college I put for my number one choice is about an hour an a half travelling there and back each day. I worry this will stress me out because it's a lot of travelling. My friend used to go to the college and he has to travel the same way I will have too and it wasn't get home until 8 at night and was up at 6 in the mornings. Coming home at 8 and then having to face the work I will have too do...I know I'd be able to do some travelling there and back but still...

Moving near my college just isn't an option at all because myself or my family can't afford that. I'm worrying about if I won't be able to manage the work load. I'm worrying I'll fail the exams. I'm worrying I won't make friends. I'm worrying I won't see my current friends because of the work load.

Part of me is excited about starting but most of me is terrified. I don't want to tell my parents because they will think I don't want to go when I do! Just I'm so terrified. What can I do to get rid of these fears? Or at least tone them down a bit. I know its normal for people heading to college to be scared and nervous. But this much?

I guess everything just hit me really...

First of all, yes it is normal for people to feel the way you do when they are about to start college. Some people just fear it more than others, and that is okay. Once you start college and go to a few classes, you will start to feel much better about it. The first couple of times you go to classes, it's still terrifying but it gets so much easier. Believe me because I just finished this last semester feeling a similar way.

Is going to a different college an option for you? Think that perhaps while you are doing your basic courses, the college you go to isn't that big of a deal. You could choose a college closer to you so you don't have to travel so far just to go. But, if there is no way you can find a college closer to home, perhaps you could work over the summer and save up some money for a dorm. Dorms are generally much cheaper than apartments and they are right there next to your college =]

I think you should check out the other options you have... colleges, distance, jobs, financial aid..

Honestly? Yes! I tell you, everything you've just written pretty much described exactly what I was like before leaving for college. It's one of the scariest things we ever do! It's something brand new, something you do on your own, a sign you're heading into the "real world" so of course it's going to be utterly terrifying. That's ok though, some fear and nervousness is a good thing!

The travelling is somewhat of an issue but, honestly, try not to worry about it too much until the time comes and you've actually experienced what it's like. Use the travel time productively, if you can, to get some work done (even if it's just reading) to ease your workload a little. That's three hours of travel every day so definitely a lot of work you could be doing! Is there no financial aid that would be available to you to allow you to move closer? If not I completely understand, but it's something to think about for your second year of college, yeah?

Remember that there's going to loads of help available to you! If you find yourself struggling with the workload or absolutely anything else then there are people on campus who CAN and who WILL help you! Especially as it's your first year, people will be looking out for you guys and if you're struggling at all then it's really important that you make that known and seek help right away instead of letting it sit for weeks/months and letting it grow into a bigger and bigger problem. Something to remember, yeah?

Honestly, let things fall into place. Having all these worries is perfectly natural but once you've started and settled in you'll find your place and you'll get yourself into a routine that works for you. It's scary right now and it'll be scary for the first few weeks but you'll find your feet eventually. :)

As I said, it's ok to feel nervy. I was an absolute wreck from around the time I filled out the application until I left! Nerves are good and it's a massive relief when you do find your feet and get settled in. Try not to let these nerves and worries get in the way right now though, yeah? You've got a while to wait yet and a few months ahead to just enjoy!

Thank you both! (: That really helps.

I'll already be receiving financial aid but I don't think it would be enough to pay for living there also. I'll have to talk about it to my parents. Maybe in my second year, I could move there.
