If I take more than the prescribed dose of vicoden, or drinking a bottle of vodka, I'm not abusing those substances, but inviting them into my body with warm, open arms.

Abusing it would be to pour the vodka and pills down the drain.

Abuse is an interesting term.  Medically it means taking more than the prescribed amount or when you don't need it.  The psychological definition means any time a substance interferes with your daily activities.
