Has anyone ever been to the geek squad to have them repair something on your computer? Do they charge a lot?

I'm going there today 'cause there's dust on the fan of my laptop, and I don't trust myself to clean it.

Oh please.
Geek Squad is a complete ripoff.  They're just there to take advantage of old ladies who don't know what they're doing.  They overcharge like hell.

Just get a can of air from Office Max and spray the fan.

What... you don't trust yourself to blow on a bit of plastic? If they charge at all, it's too much for that.

I think you have to take something apart...and I'm not taking anything apart.

You've got to take the case off. It's a bit of plastic held in place with some screws. Nothing complex or delicate.

It's really not that serious...it's plastic...and taking it apart isn't that complicated. You're paying unnecessary money.

Exactly. If there's dust on the fan, don't blow on it, that will just make it go in further, which is not what you want.

What I used to do with my old laptops is stick the handheld end of my vacuum cleaner to it and it sucked the dust right out of there, without removing the case or anything.

Geeksquad are full of shit.

Geek Squad is horrible. They're prices are very overcharged and there techs. don't even know what they are doing. If you look around you will find many horror stories about them. A lot of times they will diagnose a fake error to make you buy something else you really don't need.

I would suggest you to not go with them. It's VERY simple to clean a fan. Here is the easiest way.

Hope this helps. If you want to go with them it's okay, but just promise me to not feed into there BS if they say you have a problem with something else.

Really?

My sister had a laptop under warranty from Circuit City.  POS kept dying and they could not figure out what was going on.  They shipped it out without her knowledge (and eventually told that it was unrepairable), not even giving a chance to make back-ups or to get the 3rd party extra-life battery off.  It took over 30 minutes of arguing over the phone for them to agree to ship back the battery and hard drive.

FireDog can't figure out a power-supply issue after being told the problem, and then ship it out without informing the rightful owner as to where there stuff is going.

I know! I went to the guy, and I told him what was wrong with it, and I said, "Okay, so to fix it, how much would it cost me?" He said, "It would cost 20 dollars for us to clean the fan, but in order to figure out if that's really what's wrong with it, and to do a diagnostics check on the computer, it would costs 69.99." I said, "But I just told you what was wrong with it...and you'd have to do that anyway?" He said, "Yeah. We have to do a diagnostics check, but I mean, we sell compressed air if you want to try that, but I can't guarantee that's what wrong with it."

He was such a jerk, wasn't friendly at all.  I went over to Circuit City 'cause they're cheaper than Best Buy, and I just asked where the compressed air was. He pointed me to it, and I told the firedog guy my problem and asked him some questions about it, and he politely helped me out.

Fuck yourself asshat. I'm no fan of the Geek Squad, but being as I work there, and have actual knowledge of how best buy works, I can tell you right quick that its a not the worst way to fix a computer.

Yes, the prices are high. Yes, SOME of the techs are idiots. But if you've ever seen the kind of questions we deal with, you'd understnad why we charge so much.
