I don't understand why God would assign everyone a trial run to test the "faith" of his own creations. Why are we not just born into heaven and taught the ways of Godliness?

Generic Christian response: Adam and Eve, remember? The Fall, Original Sin, and so forth?

It could be that the world was created by the demiurge and is thus empty of inherent meaning. We exist in this life free ourselves from it.
