with residents

I am an RA at my university (a resident assistant, a student leader who lives in a dorm on your floor and is someone you can talk to about problems, questions, etc....they help you with anything you need)

I love being an RA and it is really rewarding.  However, I feel at times that it sucks because I can't BE myself in front of residents (mine and other RAs residents).

It will be my senior year and i wish I could have pictures of my friends and I on facebook with us drinking alcohol because we're all 21 and go to the bars.  I wish I could put my pics up in my room that has my friend and I drinking from straws (there was alcohol in the cup, but you can't see it).

What is your advice to an RA?  If you've been one, do you recommend me never putting pics on facebook or maybe 1 or 2 (with NO "evidence" of drinking)??
Should I decorate my room with pics of my friends and I drinking subtly or not?

I can't speak much to the specifics, because alcohol is against the rules at my university where i was an RA so I never dealt with this exactly.

However, generally, I think you need to be as honest as you can be. You drink because it is legal for you to do so, You are not advocating drinking, and you are not advocating minors drink. Thats important to establish.

Be subtle and mature about your decisions, and that will reflect in how your residence view you.

As to facebook: putting pics of yourself up drinking is never smart. Employers and others look to facebook and its best to always represent yourself professionally.

Personally, I don't feel that that's something that you should do. Even if you're over 21, your residents are going to mimic your actions, even if they are under 21. If it's not something that you want them to do, you don't want to do it.

Do you have your residents as friends on Facebook? I don't think I'd ever recommend putting pictures of you drinking on Facebook of MySpace, RA or not (I tend to find it pretty tacky when people post pictures to brag about partying...plus I have co-workers as friends, and I definitely don't want to give off that vibe to them).

As for having pictures of you subtly drinking in your room: I suppose that's up to you. It's not like you have to plaster "look! I drink!" in your room, and you should show off your personality and your friends in your room, because that tends to make it more welcoming (I had a ton of posters from events that I went to on campus, or of my favorite movies, etc. not too many pictures though).
