This site is full of young minds and great ideas. So why not try to encourage them to take the supportive aspect that Livewire has strive so hard for out in the real world, as well as give them a forum to give and get ideas on how to do just this?

The title can be played around, it's the idea behind it that I'm more concerned with.

What do you guys think? Personally, I think this would be an excellent idea for a forum and am rather surprised there isn't one similar to it. People may discuss volunteering ideas, what groups they advocate, and what they are doing for their fellow mankind.

It is well to be prepared for life as it is, but it is better to be prepared to make life better than it is. ~Sargent Shriver, helped lead and develop the Peace Corps

Definition of civic engagement:
-the participation of civil society organizations and citizens-at-large through direct and indirect interactions with government, multilateral institutions and business establishments to influence decision making and share control over priority setting, policy making, resource allocations and access to public goods and services.
-means a person or a collective action designed to address a public concern or an unmet human, educational, health care, environmental, or public safety need

I think that's a really good idea actually, IF it would actually be used.

I fully support this.
Real-life application seems like a money where your mouth is kind of thing, it'd be interesting to see who is active in that respect.

Nice idea, but I don't think it would be used that much, certainly not enough traction for me to support adding a new forum for it.

I've seen several topics that have talked about civic engagement. In fact, when I created this topic I saw one where the OP was talking about TWLOHA and promoting it at a high school through chalking.

Plus, if members did want to talk about it, where would they talk about it? The closest thing is Jobs & Hobbies but many people don't see volunteering as such. And the general rule is on here, if it doesn't fit anywhere place it in DTRM. And you might as well forget about advocating anything in that forum in a serious manner.

I would definitely talk about my experiences volunteering at a local animal rehabilitation shelter, and I would try and  promote others to volunteer at a local organization.

Exactly. Several members on here are Americorps members, violunteer at local animal shelters (heatherette and the raven talk about doing that a lot and has posted images of the animals they work with), advocate important health programs such as the American Heart Association (when I was using an avatar for that, I had several members come forward to me talking about how they have been advocating it), and so much more.

It's almost people are in hiding with these projects and not that many people realize just what good we all can do. Sharing our experiences and ideas is just as vital as doing the good deed.

Much as I don't see that many topics about this sort of thing, I see a fair few. And while this might not be completely needed, it strikes me as a good way to encourage those kinda of topics which I would have thought should be fairly well in LW's mandate.

To anyone who says we don't need it because there are not enough topics, people didn't need gyms, they could have used any old building, but they built them and more people came...

In short, good idea, I support.

I added the definition of civic engagement so that people would be more aware that this doesn't technically stop with volunteering opportunities that anyone can do, but also include even military and government funded programs such as Peace Corps and Americorps (not really sure what the UK or other countries have, but surely they have something similar).

I support this 100% and would be extremely active in such a forum.

As a group however, I would not use it.

Exactly. Groups are shit on here and to be honest, kind of pointless unless you are trying to plan something together (such as running a contest or a team).

I'm not sure how much others might support this, even though it would strike interest in a good enough members to be an active forum.
I don't see too many topics, and I don't make any, but I would start making a few for sure.

I think it is the same as the idea of an economics and financial issues forum.
