I think there is more truth in his statement than you would like to believe. Americans tend to be amero-centric and self-indulged to a great degree. That being said Europeans tend to greatly dismiss America's effect on WWII and embellish their own.
I think its quite widely known that American greatly exaggerate their role in WW2. Now, return to topic discussion.
How would WW2 have turned out had America stayed out of it? It seem to me that the topic discussion is about America being so "self important". And you did include the statement, "They do say history repeats itself." In bold letters. Is that not an invitation to discuss that history?
Nobody said that American involvement wasn't necessary in WW2. However British troops did storm 2 beaches on D Day and yet who's state leader wasn't invited? Few Americans seem to be aware of that fact, and I'm sure that many are unaware that along with the 10,000 US marines that stormed the Helmand Province yesterday are 8,300 of our troops. Thirdly no British person here has disagreed with me, the general consensus being that you guys take far too much credit for your role.

I said most Europeans routinely understate the US involvement and impact. You're in the UK, your circle of friends are European. You've verified my statement with yours. History doesn't know borders. If we hadn't supplied England and Russia with the fruit of our production neither would have lasted against the assault. The tanks and arms supplied to Russia allowed the eastern front to offer grinding resistence at Stalingrad and be a turning point in the war. Most areas of Russian production were overrun and without the Eastern Front allowing over 70% of Germany forces to be engaged attacking Fortress Europe wouldn't have been possible regardless of what country landed at what beach.

I did know of that slight, but I didn't dig into who was on the invitation committee. I haven't heard about 10,000 Marines or how many British troops there are. The number of Marines has been reported as 4000. And would you really expect any serious disagreement from the British posters?
Todays Times reports 10,000 marines in Helmand. There isn't exactly a consensus of disagreement among the american posters either, theres hundreds more americans here, and a minority with any input.

Even scarier than America's nonexistent exaggerating of its involvement in WW2 is Europe's distorted view of the majority of Americans today.

Yes, except the Taliban will never be removed from Afghanistan. The most that could happe is that it's replaced by another nationalist group who may or may not be any better for the population.
