I never said it was self hating, nor did I claim a hairdo makes you White. Actually, the difference is tanning makes you darker, but never as dark as a Negro will be.

This kind of topic really worries me.It invites racism by implication & I find many of the responses confusing
I'm sure one can make generalizations about any group of people & they will be true to degree that one is aware of huge areas of overlap with other groups, so the statement can act only as a rough estimate.
For instance I'm aware that some black Americans straighten their hair to look more like whites & do so out of self dislike even racial dislike, but I don't think one can generalise about that too much since most of us are fashion victims to some degree & all over the world men & women are seeking to alter their appearence in order to look like some idealized 'other'.Are brunettes dyeing blonde, girls wearing high heels,Japanese trying for round eyes, all signs of some racial self hatred. I don't think that is likely
The girl in the picture could be mixed race,like most of us.But with pale eyes she could be Celtic,Spanish,or Greek All before & after a long holiday in the sun.But so what? Why is it important?
These days 'Black' seems to mean 'non -white' without taking into account all the different shades of 'non-white'so it is a meaningless term.
Similarly 'white ' is not defined, as though it is obvious when it isn't.Greeks ,Italians & Spaniards were considered non white in Aystralia for a long time as they were in England.The Nazis considered blue eyed blondes only to be real whites.I'm blue eyed & ash blonde but come from a family with many browneyed brunettes.My mother passed as South African Coloured ,a Maori in NZ,An Indian in NZ & S Africa. & a Mexican in the US.She was English Anglo-Saxon.
O know I'm labouring the obvious but I'm doing so because I suspect this sort of topic.Its implications of dividing us up into some specious heirarchy in a nudge- nudge wink- wink. sort of way.Why is everybody so concerned about non -whiteness in countries like the US in ways that are not to do with poverty & its commcomitants.What is it with Americans & race?

I disagree with the "Black people straighten their hair because of self hate" part. Maybe some do, but most people around here just do it because of the look.
