Neither Catholics nor "Christians" are Christians.
Contradiction.

Not at all, since by "Christians" with quotes, I don't mean Christians (without quotes), but merely people who think they are Christians.

You didn't put quotes around Catholic...

I'm sorry. "Catholics". There you go :=)

Catholicism isn't a "branch" of Christianity.

Roman Catholicism was the original church that developed during the time of the Roman Empire, and later the Protestant churches split off from it.

In short, it's the trunk, and protestant sects are the "branches"

Christian practice precedes Roman Catholicism, hence the Catholic Church =/= the original Church.

You can't claim originality just because you've got the fanciest hats, the most kids and the most rampant child molestation.

Still, it's purely an opinion that you hold, nothing more.

Why do you doubt the argument I have put forward then? Christianity has 38000 versions that pretty much disagree on most things. If this is the case, then how can this be a uniform and consistent "Christianity"?

Although almost all denominations might disagree on a few minor issues, such as Mary being a holy figure, or whether or not you must pray through saints, all Christian denominations believe that Jesus Christi died on the cross for our sins. If you believe that, then regardless of what you choose to call yourself, you are a Christian.

Mary being a holy figure, transubstantiation, the divine/human dichotomy of Jesus and so on are hardly minor issues. Even with that particular story you cited, there are conflicting accounts between denominations, such as whether or not that death was a final physical death, the nature of original sin and so on.

There is a certain pride to being Catholic and there are major differences between Catholicism and Protestant denominations.

This is why many people refer to themselves as "Catholic".

Some refer to themselves as "Catholic Christians" and yet othes merely refer to themselves as "Christian".

However, for someone to say "I'm Catholic, not Christian" is entirely wrong. Also, anyone who says that Catholics are not Christians is wrong as well.

Are Catholics Christians? Yes!

Christianity has branches. Judiasm, Catholic, Pentecostal (me), baptist...etc.
Hate to call you out here, but Judaism is definately not a branch of Christianity.

There is no such thing as "fruit". There are so many different "kinds"! Colors, flavors, the plants that make them, the animals that eat them... these are hardly minor differences.

The one qualifying component that is necessary is following the teachings of Christ.
