I have a huge problem with my desktop not picking up the wireless connection that I receive. Not only is it annoying as shit, but it generally crashes the whole connection for my entire family; therefore, I'm always stuck to fix the problem before I get yelled at.
What I tend to do is this:
-If I notice that things begin to lag and become slow, I usually just sit here and wait a few minutes to let it cool off and calm down.
-If not that, and it becomes a really big problem, I try to reset (not fully, but just unplugging and replugging in) my router connection to the comcast box which I have. It works like a charm and fixes the problem almost instantly.
If it's not already, be sure to have your security enabled for your network so that no one can come in and disrupt the flow of everything that is happening, plus it's just pure security for you.
You can also go into your firewall settings and make sure that everything adds up and you are giving the wireless internet access to your computer.
I really doubt that the problem rests in your computer and/or router. It is based off of the fact that, in all honesty, microsoft sucks and is incapable of fully filling everything that needs to be patched with Windows Vista. Most people have problems similar to this, and if you want too, I'd suggest either waiting for windows 7 to come out or reverting back to windows XP temporarily.
Also:
Try checking your IP configuration and seeing if the right connection is there.
Scan for networks in your area and check to see if yours comes up. If it doesn't, you may need to reset your router.
Good Luck. (:
