i feel confident enough not to offend people

but why's it got to be so confusing for?

People have a tendency to see the words as meaning more or less the same thing. Often times, they overlap a lot. Latino and Hispanic, for example, overlaps more often than not. As such, people who are not entirely aware of the terms (and there are a good number who aren't in the US, as is evident by the arguments you see over the terms in this forum) will mistake the two as essentially being synonyms with each other. This topic, therefore, is to clarify their meanings and something to point individuals confused about the terms to.

For sure, dude.  I definitely see where you're coming from.

However, why don't spanish/latin/whatever people have one non-offensive term that applies to everyone?  i'm european -- from switzerland and ukraine/czechoslovakia -- but everyone calls me white.  it's kind of ignorant of my heritage, but it's easier, and everyone gets along.  I can call hella people asian and they won't be offended.  What about yous guys, give us something simple that won't piss you off.  I'm not about to learn about every single culture that thrives in the US/world, way too much work, and i don't expect you to either

Personally, for anyone who I think is from Spain or Portugal, I just say they're white. For anyone who I think is from Latin America, I just they're Latino. I typically don't refer to race in doing this (though I have in the past, partially out of mistake and partially out of a lack of a better term for it - I didn't feel calling them all Mestizo would be appropriate either). Remember, Asian doesn't really refer to a race either, though we tend to think it does.

Words denoting geographic origins of people are more or less taken as essentially being terms for race, or something close enough to it, simply because geography and race are positively correlated very strongly with each other. If I say this guy is from Latin America, or is Latino, you're going to construct an image of what you think is a typical Latin American in your head. No, it's not exactly a race, but it's close enough to it that people will understand it like it were a racial term and it's why people will mix it up as if it were a race.
