iphone! iphone! iphone!
Not for texting. Capacitive screens are way over-sensative for that. Hell, touch-screens period aren't the best for texting, but if you have to....
If money's no object, I say go for the N97 - IMO one of if not the best phone currently on the market. Just keep in mind it's very pricey.
Second to that, I say check out either the Nokia 5800 (it's basically the weaker and quirkier but far cheaper version of the N97), or the G1. The G1 has it's issues, but the Android OS is pretty solid in my experience.
The iPhone... it's not terrible, but its got some issues. For starters, at least as of iPhone 2.0, it had limited push email especially for Gmail. Texting and text entry in general is difficult for any capacitive screen phone where the screen is the only means of text input, but the iPhone to my knowledge has no way to use any but the default keyboard, unlike Android and the two nokia phones I mentioned. Android has options through apps (unlike iPhone, android apps can do a lot more and have access to more parts of the system if need be), and the nokia phones have T9, mini keypads, handwriting built-in (not to mention N97 has a real, physical keyboard too, as does the G1).
