Because it gives us something to live for. We understand that we'll die one day, but we have no idea when. Trying to calculate the exact time is just the product of human curiosity. It makes us feel as though we know when the culmination of our time will be, and thus to some extent, we feel more in control of our "destiny." This seems to be an increasing trend. Wasn't it just June 6th of 2006 that the world was supposed to end? Now 6 years later, the Mayans are predicting our impending doom? What ever happened to the "Rapture", or nuclear winter, or things of those natures? It's all in the context of time. Like we're just ready to die, and the closer the implications of the explanation, the better. On the note of 2012, however, I've read that more than anything, it is the resetting of the Mayan calendar. So the Mayans will probably be measuring time in a new standard apart from "B.C." and "A.D." (which I'd be surprised to find they used to begin with). The only impending doom I sense coming from that is from the backlash of Christians who would object to such a "baseless" new standard. And even if it's not the resetting, come on. What could ancient Mayans explain that modern science and technology could not? The Mayans thought sacrificing live humans (especially children for their purity) by cutting out their hearts in offering to the gods was a good idea. SERIOUSLY?
