this one guy started dating this girl last friday, he is now officially single on facebook (though he went on a trip to london, so technically he's been single since friday)

People view relationships differently. Some people consider being boyfriend and girlfriend part of finding out whether or not you truly care for another. Some people can date with the prospect of, "let's see if we're compatible" and others don't. Personally, I don't get in a relationship if I'm not already emotionally attached to the persona and vice versa.
It just depends on how you view relationships in the end.
