I am thinking of purchasing a car I have recently found. After my first BMW I am hooked on BMW's. I already own a car (little Honda Accord that is not running ATM) but I think I want this as a side project car.

It gets HORRIBLE gas milleage due to the v12 in it and 300 hp ;) 12 City and 18 Highway lol.

Here is the problem. The rear tranny seal is leaking and that will cost about 300 to fix, I am not sure how long it was driven like that but I am going to check to see if the tranny fluid is burnt. If it is not I'm considering buying it. Why would you guys do?

BTW it is a 1990 750il ($1700)

M3's are more expensive and I am 17. I can not get an auto loan. And this car can beat most M3's.

The question is, how badly do you want it? As a rule of thumb, you will never make money restoring/fixing a car.

I'm not one for BMWs. They aren't good in the snow, they break and are difficult to fix, and are no better than a normal car to me.

Word of advice, one of my friends was hooked on BMWs. He just had to have one, so he bought an older one. He thought he was the shit because he drove a beemer. Then leaving my house at twelve one night, his trammy (which he did fix) started leaking, and he wound up pushing the car across the George Washington Bridge.

Buy a true M3, a nice E30 you can pick one up for under 3 grand. M3's weren't and aren't built to go fast in a straight line.  They are meant to handle and they do that very well especially the E30.

300HP is pathetic for a V12. The Cobalt SS is pushing 260HP in an I4.

Actually, you're wrong.

any car on a set of snow tires can be good in the snow if you know how to drive worth a goddamn.. And as for them breaking and being hard to fix, they're just like any other car.

Maybe your friend was a nigger and bought a piece of beaten shit.. just my $.02

As long as you realize you will piss away more money maintaining it than it cost to buy, sure.

And thats assuming its average or better than average.  If rough or in need of maintenance, it can be a nightmare.  Those V12s were not known for being reliable.  Same basic one is in the 850i.  Even the V8s of that generation had major issues.

To put it in perspective, you are not maintaining a 1700 car, but rather a 19 year old $60,000 car.  If you can afford to fix it, and it's in super good shape, and you have some car knowledge, than you could consider it.

Dude, if I were you, I'd just wait until you were 18 and can get someone to co-sign for you, and pick up a 2000-ish 3 series. Some of the best handling cars made, aren't pieces of shit, won't drink gas, and are very quick.
