*WARNING* British Topic

I don't know if I'm suddenly becoming really conservative or not, but I do not see the point of paying people dole money to just sit at home, especially when they are physically able to work.

I personanally think they should be heavily means tested. Of course disabled people get it, but for the other people on it, they should be put to some kind of work.

The more educated people on here might understand if I say they (the people on the dole) should build famine roads.

They should be put to work of some description, no matter how pointless or trivial so that they are not earning money for nothing.

And yes I do know that not having a dole increases crime, but at the same time paying people to stay at home and not rob stuff is stupid.

I don't know why the government is so stupid as not to do this.

Public Work Schemes, building roads which go nowhere

why are you just repeating what I said?

EDIT: and that is a terrible comparison. Starving people should not be put to work like that.

I think that those who are able to work should. It's just basic.

i agree.  Kids are dropping out of education when they're 16 to just hang around the estates and the pubs, they get paid for it, so why not?  Right.
That's their mentality.  They get paid for doing nothing and it's stupid.

People like me who are stressing out about getting a career, earning money to survive are mugs really, since these people just sit about without a care in the world.

Hate it.

The US is the same. I don't have a problem with people who are physically or mentally unable to work, by all means let's help them. But the able bodied, no. Why should my tax money go to pay them for doing nothing but breeding. Most of the welfare recipients here have a TV, car, cable, internet, cell phone etc. Why? Welfare was meant to be a short term support system to help someone get back on their feet, it has become a way of life for 3 or 4 generations. They are taught in school that the government will take care of their every need.

Oh sorry   I skim-read and missed the famine roads.

But about the 2nd comment, they were put to work as the british goverment felt they couldn't simply give them money, so they made them work for it. So that they could afford food. But due to the shortages, food was extremely expensive. I'm not gonna bother going into more detail than that atm.

he's talking out of his arse.

There only about 8 famine roads, and they're just little lanes. Its just a phrase coined for work that was done like hedge trimming and building bridges that weren't entirely necessary.
