i think my two choices are between:

********APPLE********
Apple Powerbook G4 15" bundle
$2815.00
*********************

********DELL*********
Dell Latitude D810 15"
$2446.00
*********************

Im leaning towards the Apple now... hearing so much that Dell sucks, lol. Any specifics about these versions of Apple/Dell?

Oh, and I wouldn't have to worry about comparing service or warranty because either way, since it's a Student Computer Offering from my university, it'll be the same.

Hell yeah. If youre gonna spend that much, definitly get an Apple. You will not, I repeat, NOT regret it.

I know that some programs only run in Windows... would that normally be a problem for a college student if I get an Apple?

No. Almost all, if not all, commonly used programs for Windows have a Mac version or equivelent.

Apple.  It has great bettery life (my iBook gets 5 hours), and I like the Os (save the interface, still beats windows UI imo).  Very functional and I love the PPC arch.  Not to mention OS X is partially open source and you can have some fun with it

I wouldn't get either of them.

1. Dell's aren't known for good computers or good support.

2. Apple laptops are heavy.  I always go to the store and try to lift even the smalled iBook and they are way too heavy.  If you are going to carry that puppy around, why not get something ultra-light.

---
Most software runs on both Mac and PC.  They've usually got ports for both.  So running software usually isn't an issue.

Both can accomodate the casual computer user.  I'm guessing you are a casual user.

Macs tend to look better, and looking good is always a plus.

---

My suggestion: Get a PC.  More specifically, a Tablet PC.  They are light, for one.  3-4lbs at most.  Get one with a detachable keyboard, then you're talking about notebook weight.  Secondly, you can write on them.  Need to take notes?  No problem.  Need to draw a diagram, not an issue.

A tablet is a college student's friend.  Sure, they can't run high end games, and their screen is usually pretty small, but if you're using a computer for utility and not just fun and games, you already know those things don't really matter. (Unless you're doing graphics art or enginneering design.)

I've got spurs that jingle jangle jingle.
As I go riding merrily along.
And they sing, "Oh, ain't you glad you're single?"
And that song ain't so very far from wrong.

apple wait till they get their intel chips

I would strongly advise against that for 2 reasons:

A. That wont occur till mid next year if im not mistaken

B.G5's pwn.  And imo the PPC arch beats the shit outta the x86.

If you are wanting it to be very portable, I'd go for an apple. I bought a 12" ibook G4 for myself ($1600 w/ 512MB 60GB harddrive.. and airport + bluetooth... My toshiba laptop with basically the same was $2200) for school.. for taking notes, doing the research, etc etc etc, and I love it.. It's *way* lighter than my toshiba laptop.. i find macosx extremely easy to use compared to a windows machine. I don't have to worry about virus's or spyware.. it "sleeps" allot nicer than a windows PC does.. you open it, and its on.. a windows pc takes 5 times longer if not more to get going..
You can still use microsoft office on it.. so you don't have to learn a new word processing software.. Yes, MSN Messenger *IS* a downside, it's crap, I hate it.. BUT... I use Fire, or Adium which will let me connect to msn/yahoo/aim and a few others all in one program, it's really nice.

I had one little problem with my ibook, and that is when I got it the optical drive was broken, it wouldn't work. I got apple on the phone right away,a nd they shipped me an entirely new laptop,  not just the drive, but they completely replaced the laptop, and they shipped me the new one before I sent out my old one. They were extremely helpful. So their customer service gets an A+ with me

Windows laptops are nice to, as people tend to know more about them, but.. I'd go for a mac over a windows laptop any day just because they're easier to move around to classes.. and I dont have to constantly worry about virus's and such.. Plus.. they're pretty :P

If you have any questions on the mac or even a dell, as I've owned one of them too.. send me a pm, I have no problem answering the questions!
