I'm against because American kids are way too unstable to be legally smoking pot.

So let them do it illegally and start getting in the wrong people because they can't get it any other way? Amazing logic.

Don't legalize it, we already have mind-alterants like Oxycontin essentially legal, we should stop another from joining.

Fuck pot smokers. Marijuana is dangerous and all of you motherfucking potheads who say it isn't are fucking lying.

Oh yeah because you totally sound like you know what you're talking about. Just because you learned something in school doesn't mean it's true. Pot was made illegal because Hemp was going to destroy all sorts of other industries (cotton, timber, oil, plastic) and they lobbied against it. Today it remains illegal because of years of fear and propaganda, and because cannabis has an ENORMOUS medical benefit (it has been shown in laboratory studies to kill certain types of cancers, it's a great painkiller, sleep aid, anti-inflammatory, bronchitis dilator, anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, anti-nausea, anti-psychotic, etc.) it would essentially make more than half of modern medicines useless. It could also be used to make ethanol fuel and biodegradable plastic.

Constitutional argument for legalization:
Back in the 1920s with alcohol prohibition the government had to pass and amendment to the constitution to make alcohol illegal they didn't just make a law banning alcohol which they would have if they could have because it would have been far less time consuming. This would mean that drug use in protected by the constitution and all of our current drug laws are unconstitutional. Another example is in the 1960s when Timothy Leary got the Marihuana (I have no idea why they used to spell it that way) Tax act declared unconstitutional. Although shortly thereafter they just created the modern scheduling system.

And to the person posting above me. Oxycodone (the chemical in Oxycontin, Percocet, Endocet, etc.) is not legal for everyone.  A person has to be in severe pain to get a drug like that even though it can be used recreationally it is not sold for recreation and if you are caught with it and don't have a prescription it's a felony. Your argument is invalid.

Dont legalize it, if u do, big companies will tax it like uve never seen before and it will be the most terrible quality weed uve ever smoked, u could still buy from local dealers but theyll go out of business thanks to the many people who would rather buy legally, basically, if u legalize pot, ur going to be forced to pay ridiculous prices for the worst weed in the world and thats the bottom line

I'm sure everything I'm about to type has already been said, but I only read pages 1 and 5, so here goes.

1) It's disgraceful that innocent people can be thrown in prison because they choose to smoke weed. There's NOTHING immoral about it and it's an infringement of human rights to ruin lives like that. This is a point even non-smokers must be able to understand, and I can't believe there isn't a huge uproar about these government crimes.

Hitler discriminated against Jews (along with others) by locking them up and killing them. Our governments do the same thing today to pot smokers. (People die in prison, especially sick people that decided to use cannabis to help them and were locked up for it). It's sickening cannabis users are seen as sub-human.

Thats an extreme analogy but you get the point. The government does more harm to pot users than pot does to pot users.

2) The drug itself really isn't that bad. There are much worse, yet legal, things out there. It's less harmful and addictive than tobacco, but also carries a TONNE of medical benefits. And, an enjoyable high.

Most people assume weed is illegal because it is bad, but thats not true at all, and thats some VERY dangerous thinking.

3) I know people have already talked about the financial benefits of legalization. Taking money out of the hands of drug dealers (who also sell dangerous drugs) and putting it into government hands where it can theoretically be put to good use.

4) The hemp industry. Legalisation would pave the way for hemp by eliminating the stigma attached to it. A stigma, by the way, that was created by propaganda in the first place to destroy the hemp industry. Legalising cannabis = Hemp industry booming. Paper, fuels, clothing and many many more uses. Really, hemp is wonderful and the fact that we are not making huge use of it says a lot about the uselessness of the human species.

5) Cannabis use can help people cut down on more harmful and addictive drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. It's not going to stop people using other things (and rightly so) but I'd rather people be driving high than driving drunk. And any alcoholic can tell you how life destroying booze can be.

TLDR? - Pot exists. People like it. Deal with it, stop ruining lives by imprisoning them and let them have their medicine / fun. Governments should actually benefit from allowing it anyway. It's win fucking win for everyone.

There's nothing I can say that you can't find out for yourself, if you just keep an open mind. Remember pot smokers are human too, try and have some compassion.

Ugh.  Do you know how unintelligent you sound?  Do you understand how business even works let alone the current illegal business of growing marijuana?

Prices now are determined by a few variables:
Cost to grow, power, set up, fertilizers, seeds, ect.
Cost to transport
Cost of risk
Number of people who gain posession of the marijuana before you.

Heres an example grower sells 10 pounds to lets say 5 people, the price is determined by how much he spent to grow it, his time and effort, and what he feels is a good price for the risk he took.  Those 5 people take their 10 pounds each and pass out say 1 pound to 10 other people, those 10 people pass out that pound to smaller dealers, who then pass it on to you.  Typically marijuana goes through 3-5 people before it makes it to you.  This process costs ALOT, the grower may have only been charging $2 a gram but by the time it makes it to you, you are paying $20.

Now if companies started growing their costs would go down.  They can buy larger amounts of fertilizers for cheaper.  The process can be automated and thus requiring less money.  Plus they can grow larger amounts of marijuana.  This is where we get into economics.

Large Supply = Lower Prices, simply to move the product faster they lower prices.  Lower price = More product sold.  Now they have developed a price point, to meet supply and demand at an acceptable price.  Now on top of that price which would be significantly lower than it is now, the government would tack on a tax.  Now the point would be to undermine the black market so the tax would keep the price below black market prices.

Furthermore why would a company produce a shitty product and sell it high.  Someone else will just make a better product and sell it for less, this is called competition.

One final point during prohibition, alcohol tasted worse, was far more dangerous, and far more expensive...

Take a business and economics class.
