The original Cube was a very low budget film, and had little to no marketing. However, it took the fear of claustrophobia to a whole new level by throwing 8 people into a 'cube' of square rooms loaded with traps, with no reason and no memory of what happened or how they got there.
The movie is all about their attempt to escape each room without getting killed and surviving the 'cubes' maze alive. However, they have no food or water so time is of the essence.
Cube does a good job keeping the suspense level high, while keeping viewers interested. There is a good balance of story and action along with everyone's attempt to survive. Like most low budget movies, it suffers from poor acting.
The Good:
+ A new concept!
+ Was filmed in room square room, did a good job not revealing this
+ Great entertainment value for a low budget
The Bad:
- Poor acting on some of the main characters brings the atmosphere down
- A lot of cheesy moments where they should have been stressful
- Very short, plot was rushed along
Final Say:
Being a low budget film, and the fact I had never heard of the series, I didn't expect much. It was well worth the hour and 20 mins or whatever I dedicated to it. The follow up films (Cube 2, Cube 0) are utter garbage and really bring down this film. I reccomend this if you have nothing else to watch, but please, don't watch Cube Zero or Two.
