i got accepted to 6 schools. problem is: 4 of them are private: problem with that: MY FAMILY COULDN'T AFFORD THEM. this is because we're considered upper-middle class which means we "can afford them" WHICH IS COMPLETE BULL. my family would have to take a serious hit and basically my parents would have to have a complete lifestyle change. i don't want to burden them with 120,000 (which is a years income and take that with loans and interest rates=it becomes seriously nasty) just for undergraduate (and i'm considering law school, too). basically, i'm gonna end up at some god foresaken public school where there isn't a poli sci program *only one of the two public state schools have decent programs for what i'm interested in* I HATE BEING IN THE UPPER MIDDLE CLASS.

Private colleges are so nice, but SOOOO expensive...  I'm in about 20k of PRIVATE loan debt and that isn't with my government loans.  It's only my second year.  I got a grant worth 9800 this year.. it looked nice on paper, but doesn't help when you have a school tuition of 32k a year.  I was told to go to my dean to talk about how I want to keep going here, but I can not afford to take out 10k or more in private loans on top of everything else.  I hope everything works out for you.  I tried to go to my school my senior year to tell them I needed more aid and I was told to do scholarships.

You really don't deserve to go to any school. What makes you "entitled" to go to some first choice private?

She did not say anything about how she felt entitled to go to her first choice school.  She's just bummed out that a lot of colleges would like her, but she does not have the funds to go to the ones she wants.

i never said i was entitled to go. i just would have liked to, but i'll be happy no matter where i go. it just sucks that i get accepted and money is the only thing blocking me. but, i'm not gonna let my parents take a major hit that they couldn't afford without major sacrifices. its called being a bigger person.

It's really too bad that being "middle class" excludes qualified students from entering an ideal college.  FAFSA is so ridiculous and is unrealistic in its calculations to provide financial aid.  Unless you're destitute, FAFSA funds aren't available to most people.

This puts you in the same boat as millions of other kids. Actually, the majority of the applicants we get, that is the most common scenario.

What is it that the private schools possess that you don't feel you can't get somewhere else?

see theology in a school. an actually decent program. even though i'm not religious, i was kinda looking forward to getting schooled in religious beliefs since if i want to go into politics, i'll need some knowledge of christianity. plus, gonzaga university is a pretty good school last time i checked.

no, its not. i'm not qualified for work study. i'm only qualified for loans, and i don't need loans, i need grants and scholarships. i'm getting not enough money that actually helps (loans do not count as help in this scenario because they really don't)

For me, I am fine with taking loans, I try not to think of them... however, when it is a private loan that your mom has to co sign, you never hear the end of it.  They have this system in place where you receive a parent loan for your parents and it's a large sum, around 8k.  However the program is that if your parent tries for the loan and gets denied [my dad has horrible credit] then you receive a supplement loan from the government.  However, they give you around 3k, therefore you've got to take more private loans out!  My EFC is around 3k, however that is never the case.
