http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/davidc/6c_files/documents/mysteries/strangeday.htm A Strange Day In July is the first one I'm doing. Bear with me please A Strange Day In July. Timmy woke up on a Saturday afternoon like any other, ready to go down to the beach with his friend Sarah. He opened his eyes, yawned a bit, then rolled out of bed, heading to the bathroom. Twenty minutes later, finished brushing his teeth and cleansing himself he headed to the kitchen passing by the living room. "Hey mom, hey dad I'm going to the beach with Sarah to hang out again today bye!" he said, heading out the door. His parents halfheartedly said their bye's while arguing. Amidst the arguments one could barely hear the news on the TV. The anchor on the tv, seemed to speak with a grave sense of fear in his voice. "Video research has just come in from a team in the North Pole that the ice caps, have finally melted. The team who relayed this information to us was unable to make it out with their lives. This information has been cross referenced with the news of the ozone layer weakening. Ladies and gentleman, this might be my last show". That was the full report the parents would have heard, if they weren't busy arguing with each other. Meanwhile on his way to meet Evelyn at the beach, Adam noticed it was hot. "Man it's pretty hot today, that's kind of weird" he muttered, before seeing Evelyn waving down at the docks near the beach. "Hey Adam! you're right on time today!" she told him. "I bet I can finally beat you at the rock game!". Adam smirked at that, replying "in your dreams Evelyn I'm the champ!" then tugged at his shirt, it was really hot today. He was definitely gonna ask his mom for some ice cream when he got home. Back at the house, Adam's parents regretted not fixing the air conditioner sooner. It busted two weeks ago and Adam's dad felt there was no need to call a repairman, since he felt he could fix it. Thing is, he never got AROUND to fixing it, much to the ire of Timmy's mother. "Oh don't worry Martha, I'll fix it.....by sitting on my lazy ass all day! That nice cool air sure would be useful!. Adam's father, affected by the heat as well, wasn't exactly sorry. "Well I'd have been able to fix it if I didn't have some old haggard bitch nagging at me to look for a new job! want my imitation of you? he asked her, looking down at her as he was a towering six four to her five foot five. "Oh, I'm Martha, I sit around at work as a secretary making money to NOT spend on my family! Whooptee fucking doo Adam wants a bicycle? Oh, that can't happen cause I obviously need new shoes! My family be damned! "You're not funny" Martha told him, to which he grinned, before opening the fridge. "What are you doing? she asked him. "Getting cool, what does it look like?" is what he tried to say. What he ended up saying was "Getting cool what does it look liUGH" as Martha pushed his face to get in the fridge herself. First it was push came to shove, then it escalated. Her hand, his face, his hand, her face. She fell, and it just got worse. One wishes he could say this was only happening here but nay, it was all over the globe. People were hot, sweaty, and angry about it. Unfortunately, they'd be able to cool off just soon enough. As the ice caps rapidly melted, massive tidal waves started up. They started out slowly, but within the hour, they had reached several different continents. Instead of them going underwater, they just...disappeared? Once it hit North America, we saw Adam's father raise his face up, to see a whiteness coming at him, and never looking down for as it passed, he was gone, and so was his wife Adam and Evelyn were deep in the middle of their competition, with Evelyn laughing. "Looks like I'm winning Adam!" she told him, throwing her rock the furthest, halfway across the pond. "You're on your final rock Adam, it's your turn! hope you're ready to lose!" she said blowing a raspberry. Adam grabbed his rock from her hand, cocked his arm back like he was Nolan Ryan, and chucked it as hard as he could. It didn't even hit the pond, just sailed past it. Adam smiled as Evelyn stared slack jawed at what just happened. "Looks like I win huh?" Adam asked, only to see Evelyn duck. "Why are you ducking Evelyn? He got his answer seconds later when his rock came skipping back and hit him in the face. "Evelyn looked at the rock, then at Adam. "Adam, you must've thrown it all around the world! DO IT AGAIN! she told him, shaking his arm and handing him the rock. Adam shrugged, for some reason feeling like impressing his friend, and chucked it again. He threw with all his might, but his third stone came skipping back, AGAIN! This time he was prepared fortunately, and grabbed it as it came out of the pond. The next time he threw it, and it came skipping back, he heard something. "That's an odd glitch" Adam and Evelyn turned to see....someone? no...some...thing?! in a large grey costume. It looked like an astronaut suit, but with a grey visor on all grey. He looked up at the being in the suit. "Wh...who are you? Are you a monster? The stranger shook his head. "I'm not a monster.....consider me uh....a higher up, if you will" "What do you mean by that?" "I work for some big time people. Here's the deal though. My boss, he wasn't exactly happy with how his project has turned out, so he feels like starting over, again, for the third time. So I, and my coworkers had to flush out the bad and leave the good. Your names Adam right? "Yes........and this is Evelyn" The strange being let out a small laugh. "Heh,figures. Anyways I guess what I'm here to say is, you're going to help start humanity from scratch. Now I know I know, you're young, and prob angry that we had to get rid of every other human being, but trust me, we're going to make this process easy for you" Evelyn finally spoke up "We? what do you mean we? there's only you?" The being laughed again. "Heh, I guess I forgot to introduce my friends, it's been a while....". He then claps, and several others dressed like him come out of the woodworks, along with various wildlife. "My friends Gabriel, Raphael, and Sam. My name is Michael, and welcome to Eden, your new home. Adam and Evelyn looked at each other. "You mean Eve and I are....EWWW girls have cooties!" Michael facepalmed. "He gave me a LOT to work with, didn't he guys?" Gabriel nodded. hope that was ok Post edited at 9:38 pm on Jan. 24, 2010 by Springs

http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/davidc/6c_files/documents/mysteries/Harris Burdick/placetime.htm If there was an answer, he'd find it there Jim was born on this island. He never really thought about what was beyond the horizon. Heck, none of them did. "Them" being Jim and his boys, known as the Island Boys. Real original name Ronald. Seriously why'd I let you name the group?" Jim thought to himself about his best friend and second in command, Ronald. That's why he let him name their group, Ronald was his best friend, and had been there ever since the siege happened. Jim, Ronald and even Tim could remember it like it was yesterday. They were only 12, but it had happened nearly six years ago. All three boys woke up to find their parents engaged in fights with wraith like beings. Jim, despite putting on his best act of being unafraid when reminiscing of this event, still felt like a scared little boy talking about it. That's not a surprise as even the boys fathers were scared of these strange beings rumored to be from the kingdom across the sea, had truly terrifying figures. Even though a wraith is little more than a ghost, they were inhumanly tall and flexible, with large mouths filled with fangs and hands that were more like the claws of bats, tearing into the flesh of their parents bodies and carrying them off across the sea. Ever since that day, these children have been on their own. They had done alright for themselves, after the initial shock period of realizing that their parents weren't going to come back any time soon. Tim cried the hardest, being two years younger than the others and practically a baby at the time. He still cried about it from time to time at night, which Jim heard when he had to patrol around the island himself in case the creatures returned. It always made Jim's heart sink to hear Tim, whispering in his sleep, on the brink of tears "not my mommy nooo, not my mommy noo leave her alone! leave her alooone!". Did Jim miss his parents that much? Yes, hell yes. Jim didn't cry though. Jim's dad always told him crying solved nothing. He taught him that much before he was taken abruptly. Jim remembered the lesson when it happened. Him and Ronald were sword fighting with bamboo sticks, and Ronald hit him really hard in his head and he cried. Ronald stood there as Jim's dad came out. "I'm so-so-sor-we were just playing around! I didn't mea-mean to hi-hurt him like that mister!" "It's ok Ronald you did nothing wrong. Jim, stop crying, all it does is get your shirt wet. Wipe your tears off, the pain'll go away. Sitting there wallowing in it doesn't do jack, does it?" he asked a Jim who's eyes were welling up. Jim wiped his eyes dry, and nodded. "You're right dad, you're right". Him and Ronald then continued playing, his dad grinning. Ronald kept up his trek around the island on his day of patrol, when he heard Ronald from the coconut tree at the northern point of the island. "JIM! JIM! WE FOUND SOMETHING! ITS A GIRL! Jim's eyebrows raised. He ran back as fast as he could. A good solid number of minutes later, he was near Ronald and Tim, looking at the girl walking forward from the beach. "She's barely moved forward to us, should we help her?" Ronald asked. Jim cocked his eyebrow at his friend. Sometimes, he wasn't the brightest. "What were you just going to watch her from here?" "What if she has cooties Jim!? COOTIES!? Tim asked. Ronald pointed to Tim saying 'Yeah cooties!. Jim just shook his head and walked over to her. She was pushing herself off the ground, in a kneeling position. "Hey there, what's your name?" "Ma..Mari....Mariah" she said, trying to force each word out. "Hey Mariah I'm...Jim?. His sentence changed to a question as he saw Mariah fall down right in front of him. How could I be so stupid she's probably exhausted look at her!. Jim knelt down to pick her up. He lasted about ten seconds before remembering he had never worked out a day in his life, asking his friends to help him get her off the ground. An hour later, she finally woke up. Mariah awoke to three boys standing about five feet away from her, in a wooden hut. These were the boys that she was told to get a message to. The one called Jim, with the blue sailor's outfit, stood up first. He was a lot like the man she had met before traveling to this island across the sea. "Are you ok? You need anything?" he got closer to her, checking her temperature with his hand to her head. "No..no I'm fine. I'm here for a reason though, involving you three." "What is the reason?" Ronald spoke up. He was tall, really thin, and wore glasses. The baby of the group seemed to be Tim. He still had baby fat on his cheeks and seemed to be the most easy to upset from his facial expression of wondering why she was here. "The reason I'm here is that I have come from the Kingdom Across the Sea,Overyonder with a message. A message from a man. He looked like you a bit, but older, with more facial hair" She said, pointing at Jim. "MY DAD!? Jim asked, shocked, before covering his mouth in embarrassment. "Yes..he said something about telling his children he's alive...he had something else to say before having to run again from the wraiths, something about his son or someone's son will free this kingdom, a prophecy he felt wasn't real before this happened". The three boys felt chills down their spine after hearing that. Scratch that, the two boys. "So you're saying our parents are alive?" "Yes, but I don't know if you'd want to come, it's quit dange- Mariah was cut off by Jim. "Who cares if it's dangerous! I want to go find my father! Who's with me!? "AYE AYE CAP'N JIM" Ronald and Tim said, smiling. "Looks like you're outnumbered Mariah" he told her. She nodded. "Looks like it...I'll lead you there then, now that I'm rested". Mariah stepped out of the hut, and stood tall. Her hair unfurled behind her, hands to her side, and then her eyes glowed. THe boys watched in awe as it seemed like the earth under the ocean raised up under their boat, giving them a railroad of sorts to connect their island to the kingdom. "Woah! why didn't you do that before?" "When I was attacked I had to put my energy into defending myself from those wraiths. Thanks to you letting me rest I am able to use my powers to a degree again. Thank you Jim. Now, shall we go?" she asked. Jim nodded. "Tim, you sit up front with Mariah, Ronald i'll fix the sails, you tell me when to go" "All's a go go yo" He said, looking out at the ocean. Jim thought to himself as he steered and started his ship Is she telling the truth? Is his dad still alive? If there was an answer, he'd find it there. Yeah, he'd definitely find it there Post edited at 11:30 pm on Jan. 25, 2010 by Springs

http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/davidc/6c_files/documents/mysteries/library.htm Mr. Linden's Library, or why fairy tales shouldn't come true. Stacy Morris sat in the library at her school with her senior English class, bored. Her teacher, Mrs. Lindron droned on and on about what their final book reports would be like. An inordinate amount of work and most importantly a waste of her time. See, Stacy had been hit with senioritis already in January, knowing she had a few months to go before she was out of this school. I can absolutely not WAIT for this to be over! OH MY GOOOOOOD. As soon as she thought that, Mrs. Lindron wrapped up her speech and sent the group of students out to go find their books for their reports. Stacy got up lazily as Lindron let the class go to find the perfect books for their report. Stacy wandered aimlessly, looking at book after book. "Romeo and Juliet-overdone, Hamlet-lame, The Great Gatsby-too much drama...what's this?" Stacy happened upon a particularly odd book. Odd in the fact that it seemed to glow almost when compared to the rest of the books in this library. Most had a dull color to them, tones of gray and tan whereas this had a bright green, almost metallic in nature. "Life on the Stalk? she asked to no one aloud. She shrugged as she pulled it off the shelves. "Why not? It's something new and who knows it might make this assignment actually fun!" She then walked up to the librarian, Mr. Grimm. His eyes widened in disbelief. "You're seriously checking this book out? "Yeahhhh........what, surprised someone has some originality?". Mr. Grimm was quiet for a few good moments, before answering "No, just think you should check out another book....less controversial". Stacy looked at him, then at the book, then laughed. "You can't be serious!? Oh my god you are! your face says it all! Just check the book out old man. Grimm sighed as he checked the book out to her, thinking to himself as she left with her class I warned her, I tried, I really did. Later at the Morris household, Stacy was reading this book while eating in her room. She was already enthralled in it. "heh, this is cool, it's like a homage or whatever to all those classic fairy tales except realistic". She read for hours upon hours, completely enthralled in the book, until she takes note of the time. "Holy shit...........it's almost midnight and I'm still up, I got school tomorrow.........finish this book up later" she said, putting it on her nightstand. As soon as she fell asleep, What appeared to be roots from a large plant seemed to grow from the book, encapsulating her room. Hours later, when she awoke, her room was.....gone? covered in shrubbery instead, with a large stalk leading up to the skies. "Ok....this has to be a dream.it seriously does" Just then a guy fell on her from the sky, landing with a thud. "OW! what the.." she looked at the guy and he looked at her, as they were stuck in a.......awkward position. "Well uh, I don't usually meet girls this way...my name's Jack......and you are? he said as he got off her and helped her up onto her feet. "I'm...Stacy, and this is a really weird dream, please tell me it is?" "I'm not sure if it is Stacy, but if it is it's a nice one for me" he said smiling at her. Jack was about a bit taller than her, with blond hair, pointed ears and wore a green shirt with pants and elf like shoes. Imagine Link from Zelda. "So uh.....why were you falling?" she asked him. "Oh...I was falling because of Bluton, the giant. I waned to go up there and find out what was in his castle but he threw me out. He's REAL strong. I tried stabbing him with my sword but he broke it. Now I"m unsure of what to do. Do you live around here? I don't want to leave you alone down here, unless you'd want to come with me to see the wonders o the world above the beanstalk" Stacy, thinking this was still a dream shrugged. "Sure why not" It's not like anything will harm me here. Jack held his hand out to Stacy, who he put on his back, and began to climb. Jack climbed like his parents were wombats on speed, hurrying up the stalk in a matter of moments, with the ground appearing a dot below them. He then stepped onto the front of the castle in the clouds, quietly, telling Stacey "shhh.....don't want to wake him this time" he said. Stacey nodded and followed Jack into the castle. She skulked around with Jack, not thinking as to why the giant would leave his door open after having one intruder. She then asked Jack "hey, why'd Bluton leave his door open?" Jack answered quickly. "He was too tired to go back and close it, that's why". Stacy nodded but stopped on their way through Bluton's house. She noticed ANOTHER door open, and peered in it. What she saw made her jaw drop. It was Bluton, with a sword, possibly Jack's sword, in his forehead, possibly jabbed into his brain. She shrieked, then held her mouth, or well someone else held her mouth. It was Jack. "You just HAD to be a nosy bitch, didn't you? he asked Stacy, who was crying hard now. "Damn shame too, you were a pretty one, thought you were one who'd be smarter than the others too, now you're going to be stuck with the others" he said tossing her over his shoulder, ignoring her hitting his shoulder. "Others?" "Yeah, you weren't the only girl to pick this book up, some dudes too but most o the time it's girls I'm charming. They last for a while, pretty entertaining but then they try to take my stuff or tell me that I'm doing thing sthat are wrong, and that's when they get killed. Now you're gonna be the latest to add to the pile" he said, kicking a door open. Stacy saw hundreds of dead bodies spilled in a cafeteria or what appeared to be one, as Jack smiled at her. "Buh-bye" he told her, locking her in there. "JACK YOU CAN NOT DO THIS! THIS IS JUST A DREAM! ITS JUST A DREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM! she said, crying. Mr Grimm told her. He had warned her about the book, now it was too late.

A Strange Day In July The year was 1992. The day, July 28. The sun hovered directly overhead, its lazy beams creating a haze over the pond's crystal surface. It was noon. Jimmy was nine years old then. His little sister, Jess, was six. The resemblance between the siblings was incredible, as they both had their mother's soft blue eyes and pale blonde hair. On this particular day, Jimmy and Jess pondered the meaning of life as they stared out across the calm water. Big thoughts for such small children, but earlier that day, their older brother had been married in the church sanctuary. He met his wife while studying in Italy, and the happy news of the engagement had made the local newspaper's front page. "I'm never gonna get married," Jimmy announced finally, turning to his sister. His face was set with determination, a stubborn look that children could pull off so well. "You hafta get married, Jim," Jess replied matter-of-factly, smoothing the wrinkles in her white flower-girl dress. "Everybody gets married." "But why?" Jimmy demanded, though not unkindly. "Why does everyone have to get married? It seems like a silly thing to do. It is like the end of everything." "What? No, it's not! Marriage is only the beginning. Remember what Daddy told us? About people being happier when they're in love?" "Aww, you don't know anything, Jess." Jimmy crouched down and shifted through the rocks that lay at the water's edge. "You're just a silly little girl." "Yeah, but because I'm littler than you, you're gonna get married first." She stuck out her tongue at her brother, but he was too engaged in the rocks at his feet to notice her gesture. He studied the rocks for a moment, before selecting the smoothest and flattest. It was a Petoskey stone, and the only one of its kind in sight. He stood up, looked at the rock in his hand for a moment, then laughed softly. "That's where you're wrong," he told her. "I told you, I'm never going to get married." On the last word, he idly tossed the stone out across the water. It skidded delicately across the pond, touching down for only a split second before taking to the air again. One time it bounced, two times, three, four. Jimmy watched his stone skip across the water seven times before it disappeared. It did not simply sink, however, but vanished completely while in mid-air. Jimmy frowned and put a hand up to shade his eyes from the bright sunlight. "Did you see that?" Jimmy asked, his blue eyes wide. But when he turned to look at his sister, she was busy picking all of the leaves off a nearby bush. "Jess!" Jimmy hissed, motioning for her to join him at the water's edge. She ambled to his side, and looked up at him expectantly. "I skipped a stone, and it disappeared!" "Uh-huh," Jess replied. "It sank." "No, it didn't sink! It disappeared in the air! I saw it!" Little Jess stared up at her brother, still not convinced. It was an unusual story, and she may have never believed him if it had not been for the event that followed. Only a few minutes later, the same stone skipped across the pond. But Jimmy had not thrown this stone. Neither had Jess. No, this stone was skipping toward them, from the other side of the pond. It came to rest at Jimmy's feet. "Whoa," Jimmy breathed, completely awestruck. "How did you DO that?" Jess squealed. "I don't know," came his trembling reply. The nine year-old boy and the six-year old girl stared across the pond for a few moments before Jimmy broke the silence. "I'm going to throw it back." This time, the stone traveled even further, skipping nine times total before vanishing. This time, the stone came skipping back less than a minute after it left his hand. "Again!" Cried Jess, her voice an eager screech. Jimmy's eyes narrowed and he scooped up the Petoskey stone. He was going to make it sink this time. He did not like this game anymore. He threw with all his might, but the third stone came skipping back. "Agh!" The boy cried, throwing up his arms in defeat. "Come on, Jess. We're leaving." "No," whined Jess. "Again!" Her brother glared, but her pout won in the end. Jimmy turned his body so he was perpendicular to the shoreline, and leaned onto his back foot. He held the stone loosely between his thumb and pointer finger, the way a person might hold a frisbee. He followed the steps with flawless grace, leading with his shoulder, then moving his elbow, shifting his weight forward and finally, with a crisp flick of the wrist, sent the smooth stone sailing toward the opposite side of the pond. ------------------------------------------------- The year was 1992. The day, July 28. The moon hung directly overhead, its brilliant beams dancing eerily upon the pond's inky surface. It was midnight. Timmy was nine years old then. His little sister, Tess, was six. The resemblance between the siblings was incredible, as they both had their father's intelligent emerald eyes and jet black hair. On this particular day, Timmy and Tess pondered the meaning of death as they stared out across the calm water. Big thoughts for such small children, but earlier that day, their older brother had been buried in the church cemetery. He had died in a plane crash on the way to Italy, and the terrible news of the accident had made the local newspaper's front page. "I'm never gonna die," Timmy announced finally, turning to his sister. His face was set with determination, a stubborn look that children could pull off so well. "You hafta die, Tim," Tess replied matter-of-factly, smoothing the wrinkles in her black mourning dress. "Everybody dies." "But why?" Timmy demanded, though not unkindly. "Why does everyone have to die? It seems like a silly thing to do. It is like the end of everything." "What? No, it's not! Death is only the beginning. Remember what Mommy told us? About Heaven?" "Aww, you don't know anything, Tess." Timmy crouched down and tugged at the weeds that grew along the water's edge. "You're just a silly little girl." "Yeah, but because I'm littler than you, you're gonna die first." She stuck out her tongue at her brother, but he was too engaged in the weeds at his feet to notice her gesture. He stood up, looked at his sister, then laughed softly. "That's where you're wrong," he told her. "I told you, I'm never going to die." On the last word, he heard a series of soft plops coming from the pond. He glanced up just in time to watch a stone skip toward him. It skidded delicately across the pond, touching down for only a split second before taking to the air again. One time it bounced, two times, three, four. Timmy watched his stone skip across the water seven times before it came to rest at his feet. Timmy frowned and squinted against the night to find the source of the stone. "Did you see that?" Timmy asked, his green eyes wide. But when he turned to look at his sister, she was busy poking at something in the dirt with a stick. "Tess!" Timmy hissed, motioning for her to join him at the water's edge. She strolled to his side, and looked up at him in anticipation. "A stone just came skipping out of nowhere!" "Uh-huh," Tess replied. "You're crazy." "No, I'm not crazy! It skipped right up to me! I saw it!" Little Tess stared up at her brother, still not won over. It was an unusual story, and she may have never been convinced if it had not been for the event that followed. "Then throw it back," Tess told him with a shrug. He did so, and much to his amazement, only a few minutes later, the same stone skipped back across the pond to them. "Whoa," Timmy breathed, completely dumbfounded. "How did you DO that?" Tess squealed. "I don't know," came his shaky reply. The nine year-old boy and the six-year old girl stared across the pond for a few moments before Timmy broke the silence. "I'm going to throw it again." This time, the stone came skipping back less than a minute after it left his hand. "Again!" Shrieked Tess, her voice an octave higher than it should be. Timmy's eyes narrowed and he scooped up the stone. He studied it for a moment. The stone in his palm was gray with strange circular patterns across the entire surface. It was a Petoskey stone, and he wanted to get rid of it. He no longer found the game amusing. Something seemed so supernatural about it, and it gave him the chills. Yes, he had to rid himself of the stone. He threw with all his might, but the third stone came skipping back. "No!" The boy shouted, throwing up his arms in defeat. "Come on, Tess. We're leaving." "I don't wanna leave," whimpered Tess. "Again!" Her brother glared, and would not budge on the subject. He put his arm around his sister's shoulders, and steered her back in the direction of the house. But not before retrieving the strange stone from the water's edge. "Is that a magical rock?" Tess whispered to her big brother. "I don't know, Tess," was his reply. "Come on, the sun is coming up. We should get back before Mom finds out we aren't in bed." With one last glance over his shoulder, Timmy and Tess walked away from the pond. ---------------------------------------------- Jimmy and Jess waited for two hours for the stone to return, but it never did. They sat cross-legged on the shore in silent wonder, anticipating the stone's return, but it never came skipping back to them. "Where is it?" Jess whispered to her big brother. "I don't know, Jess," was his reply. Jimmy stood slowly, dusted off the seat of his trousers, and held out a hand to help his little sister up. "Come on, the sun is going down. We should get back before Dad finds out we aren't in the church." With one last glance over his shoulder, Jimmy and Jess walked away from the pond.
