Lack of accent. People from the Western United States generally speak General American, and don't have a readily identifiable accent.

The west was America's frontier.  People moved from the east and settled in the west.  They built farms, mines and factories in the west.  Cities sprang up as industry and gold mining developed.  There were clashes with Native Americans all over the west.  The west has interesting geography.  The grand canyon, the Sierra Neveda Mountain Range are two examples.  The western states are generally less densely populated then eastern states.  California is one of the largest states in the United States.  The west has many canyons, and deserts.  Death Valley in California is the lowest point in the United States!  It is also the hottest!  People flocked to California in search of gold.  The 1849 gold rush brought thousands of people to California.  Read an article about California or westward expansion.  Hope that helps.  Good luck. :)

Utah which is in the west was the first state in the USA to grant woman the right to vote.  Many western states followed.  Western states were the first states to grant woman the right to vote.  This is because woman worked alongside man and did many chores.  There is a "saloon culture that exists in the west".  Taverns, and saloons are popular in the west.  As for the people there I cannot say much about them.  I have not been to the west.  It is a vast area.  They are strong, and hardy.  Most of them are descendants of pioneers that settled and tamed the wild west.  Others came later looking for a new life or business.  Cowboys in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico are stereotypes.  And surfing dudes in California is another stereotype.  I would not heed these stereotypes too much. There is a hint of truth to them though.  Good luck.
