So I just got off a five hour flight and am waiting for my next plane to begin boarding in 20 minutes. Looking at my ticket shows me that it'll take from 9:10 to 10:47 to get to where I'm going which confuses me. Going the other way, that same leg of the trip took me 55 minutes. Now it's going to take me an hour and a half? Why would that be? It's basically the same flight, there's very little different about my return trip, I'm even at the same gate.

Any idea why there is a difference?

They probably take different flight paths.
When i travelled last year, the trip home was an hour longer.

It's been three weeks since I had a decent sleep,

These thoughts are killing me so...

The longer flight time is because that flight will be flying into the wind (travel slower) and/or different route to avoid weather.

Time differences between countries.

Probably this, although Cabrio's answer could be the one as well.

Dispatchers don't take into account time zones when they block out flights, they look at weather conditions along the route and change the flight path accordingly (can make the mileage shorter or longer.) A computer usually calculates the distance between two cities along the path then takes into account the cruise speed of the aircraft being used, and if the weather will affect the cruise speed (99% of the time it does,) the computer will change the "estimated flight time" found on websites, tickets, etc.

The time that the flight will land is always done in the time zone that they are landing in, so I'm a little confused about what you mean that "dispatchers don't take into account time zones when they block out flights".

No usually when I fly to GR it's 9 hours to go and 10.5 hours to come back to NY- reason being that when you are flying back you are flying against the wind current so they fly slower!

When a computer calculates the flight time in the reservation system, it does it in UTC; or Greenwich Mean Time (standard for aviation) thus not taking time zone differences into account. However when you view the flight on the internet or a ticket, its converted into local time for your convenience.

The difference in times all boils down to the wind, and its possible to fly 'backwards' in some conditions.
