Think of the brain in 2 sections,

#1) Is a lumbering monster. It controls instinct, Basic emotions. It is the most ancient part of our brain. It causes people to get violent, scared, causes reflexes and "Gut reactions"

#2) Is a tiny character. The more recent part of the brain in its evolution. It controls reason, logic etc.

Psychologists compare the power these parts of our brain possess over us to a quirky metaphor

Part 1 of the brain is a rampaging elephant
Part 2 of the brain is a little monkey on the back of the elephant trying desperately to regain control

Lol, funny eh? Makes you think about just how simple humans are, We would like to think we are intelligent sophisticated animals.

But really, we are barley out of the jungle

Eh... You're over simplifying it - #1 is also the part that handles things like motor coordination and other tasks.

IMO a better way to look at it might be a kernel and userspace programs, except with the kernel also containing emotional feedback.

XD Maybe people will learn sometime that it's kinda silly to make a strong distinction between humans and other animals.
You get a spray tan and highlights and lose 10 pounds, so you'll find a mate. You stay with the mate to fill your social and bodily needs..You keep staying, you stop shaving your legs and you fart in front of him, because you don't need to impress him anymore.
Function of prettying up: boom chika wow wow. Nothing else, really. Simple and clear cut. Instinct, action, result..

I guess people associate an animal to a dog, giraffe or some other entity but not humans, despite the interesting evolutionary history. Would be interesting to see her opinion on evolution and the theory of evolution.

I agree with the analogy provided although I think the first part is lacking important features but I understand the main idea.

As much as I usually agree with you, I ... only semi agree with you over this.
Scientists, chemists, all the amazingly brilliant people in this world are NOT just monkeys on the back of some raging elephant.

Are you dumb??? Our brains are NOT simple by any means! Not even other animal brains are simple! A mouse as an organism is an extremely sophisticated piece of organic technology, don't even mention humans.

And we are very separate from the other animals. What other species has developed the ability exploit natural resources to this extent. What other species has developed this level of society?
The actual habits, and survival instinct isn't much different, but our conscious level of thinking has developed too fast for our survival instinct to really catch up...which is why we're creating all these global warming crisis and disturbing shit in the world...

This is not my comparison, the idea comes strait from a book written by a PhD certified psychologist

Man, I don't give a shit who wrote it and what certifications he has.

The brain, in any animal, is not a simple organ at all, and we don't know anything about it!

I'm frustrated to hear someone trying to call the brain a simple thing...That rampaging elephant you talked about avoids 1000's of collisions into people and objects. It synchronizes all our muscles to get the motions we want, which when you think about it, is a hefty task. There are many other examples of how intricate and well-designed our systems are, and above all, how complex they are.

Perhaps he isn't dumb...but I'd say he is a bit shallow in making a statement like that...

...You don't need a pedestal to see how amazing the mind is. Am I trying to be all smart, and better than you? No. I truly believe that we know next to nothing of the biology of our world, and that there's nothing simple here. Not even an ant hill and the way ants function is simple (a cool thing about ant hill's is that even though each ant is dumb, all together they are an intelligent system).

If it's your opinion that the brain is simple, it was probably people like you that 50 years ago said that we've discovered everything there is to discover on our planet.

Great, except that looking at the brain this way is completely ass-backwards. What you read this from is probably technically correct, but has been horribly misinterpreted.
For example, your "gut reactions" are a product of learning that involves both the emotional and rational aspects of the mind. They may be perfectly valid, even critical, for decisions that must be made very quickly.

The human part of the brain is much larger than the older parts, so your comparison is rather skewed on that front...

Doesn't mean he's right at all, especially given that his characterization is at odds with the actual neuroscience.

If you want to know what truly makes humans more unique, it's our ability to think symbolically on a very high level.
It's not economics, like Adam Smith believed (experiments with monkeys show that economic thinking is practically hardwired quite a ways back), it's not merely being rational (see previous), etc.

It's our ability to think symbolically.
