I wasn't sure if I should let you guys in on this because I thought it was this great idea I have.  But I want to get some thoughts on this.

If you don't know what catharsis is, it's a way of releasing built up emotions.  For example, screaming, throwing things... etc.

So, I randomly thought one day that going to the bathroom could be a form of catharsis.  Not to get too graphic or anything, but I think that for most people going to the bathroom is a big relief.  Maybe it's not exactly built-up emotions that are being purged here.  Or maybe it is.  Maybe the emotion was anxiety or impatience.  Discuss.

But keep in mind, catharsis doesn't always make the person feel better.

I do not think going to the bathroom is a form of catharsis because you are only relieving yourself of the fluids and/or other things.. not necessarily emotions... other than those associated with going to the bathroom.

Hey this was a good attempt but real catharsis is generally associated with tragedies and shit like that. Like the end of Romeo and Juliet, or the end of the greek myth of Oedipus.

Generally it is a release of 'bad' emotions like "wow i just watched romeo and juliet for two hours and they fucking killed themselves" you need something to release you from that shit.

Still though, for me, going to the bathroom HAS been catharsis in the past. I mean fuck sometimes it's just such a relief to get to the bathroom in time when you're real sick.

I know it probably isn't a true form of catharsis, but I thought it could be semi-catharthic.  If that is a word... my spell checker says no.

Absolutely. There are myriad of subconscious emotions associated with relieving oneself, most of them stemming from childhood. Most of us are taught that our excretions are 'dirty', unhygeinic, not to be talked about and we're generally all taught that going to the bathroom should be a solitary experience. I believe that due to this, most people have a subconscious association of pooping/peeing with something that is a bit of a guilty pleasure...because let's face it, there is a certain pleasure in the feeling of relief/satisfaction that you get when you go to the toilet.

I don't think it could be a true form of catharsis, but I do find that it is a release of one sort or another (other than the obvious).
