Some basic concepts: Lifeforms have a genetic code. You can have different forms, or "alleles", of those genes within the same species. Evolution is, at its core, the change in allelic frequency within a gene pool.
Two basic ways that these changes happen are natural selection and sexual selection. Natural selection is when, due to the environment, an allele leads to greater reproductive success (thus increasing the number of individuals with that allele and increasing its frequency in the population.).
Sexual selection works similarly, only in this case reproductive success isn't linked to the environment, it is linked to how attractive you are to potential mates.
