TuxGuitar. It's essentially a free version of Guitar Pro/Power Tab and can actually read guitar pro and power tab files.

The free ones are pretty shitty if you ask me. The top notch ones don't cost a fortune, so why not just enjoy quality entertainment instead of a cheap rip off?

Finale.
This software enables you to name your piece, set the composer name, choose the instruments. It also lets you date and add a time stamps. You can easily add notes to your work with your mouse and at your own pace. It makes your music creating abilities immense. You can pretty much create a master piece with this software.  It retails for $600. You can try before you purchase, so you won't be purchasing with a blindfold. You can decide if it's worth it.

Here's a Screenshot:

Musescore is a free music composition & notation software. You can do a lot with this software as well. You have an unlimited number of staves. You can Import and export of MusicXML and Standard MIDI Files. It's also provided in varied languages, so it's people friendly.

Con: You'll have to keep upgrading and there's a shitload of adds present.

This's a more remedial alternative, if you like 'fruity', simpler methods of learning. It's also free.
