People need answers because they fear death, in many cases. Most religions don't say much about the after-life so really that only applies to mainstream. For most, it's parental influence. For the rest, they find it on their own. People like having things to be part of. It's really the same reason we get groups of friends, or join political parties, etc.

People need to put their faith somewhere. They want to believe someone can save them, in which case it is what a higher power can do for you. People don't believe in themselves so they don't think they can do what religion can.

But why does it matter, honestly? I mean at least you're believing in something. It's better than nothing.
