Some police still monitor CD channel 9 here. But there is very little traffic.

it depends. there are a lot of old cb/shortwave/ham recievers from manufactuerers like heathkit made in the 1950s and 60s that are able to pick up all friggin sorts of bands. those seemed to disappear after the 60s though, dont know if it was new regulations on the frequency rage of receivers or what, but you can still find these radios all over ebay.

to get the best use of police waves thouh you def. need a modern police scanner that is able to dial precisely into their channels.

Depends.  Some police departments might use them for monitoring emergency situations, but probably not for official police activity.  You can get scanners that pick up the police radio activity.  But a growing number or departments are switching to a digital/encrypted system with scanners not available to the public.
