How do they work at your school?
At mine, if there is a teacher who's sick, the teachers who are on lunch at the time, fill in for half the period and then another teacher who's on lunch fills in for the other half of the period.
Every period is 75 minutes long.

The normal teacher leaves a lesson plan for him/her.

Most of the time if a teacher can't be in class we get library seminar, unless one of the office secretaries wants to sit in. But with notice ahead of time, we just get subs.

I don't get them anymore. (because I'm in 6th form now).
Now if a teacher isn't in my lesson just gets canceled and I get a free.  

But previously, when I was at school there are actually teachers at our school employed purely to cover lessons. (the school & sixth form combined has about 2500 pupils. 450 aprox sixth formers). So yeah..
