Dudes call other dudes "bud, brother, man" and chicks call other chicks "girlfriend, hoe" or whatever?

I don't get it.  I think it's kind of creepy when dudes call me bud or brother.  I've never been called girlfriend or hoe because I'm not a chick so it doesn't apply to me ( and when someone does, it goes in one ear and out the other like it's nothing)

Has anyone felt awkward when called those names I listed above?
