Well, if she wants to drink soda, it could save her money in the long run. Just because you've decided to drink water doesn't mean she has to follow suit. I'm sure there's many things you spend your money on that she thinks is stupid, but just because she doesn't do it doesn't mean that you should go ahead and "give it up" and start doing what she does. That's just how your post sounded to me anyway. I mean, I don't know the actual conversation, and the tone that both of you used would have made a huge difference in interpretation. But I've never really seen a necessity in name calling, so that kind of wasn't necessary on her part.
Well, here's the thing, her and I are both overweight and she's been talking about how she wants to lose weight for ages now, and now soda is what puts on the weight. It's true, though, because my mum hardly even eats that often, and when she does she nibbles like a little mouse. So, she basically just said, last week, "I'm going to try to stop drinking it", made it 3 days and said, "okay, I can do this, I know it won't kill me" and then went back to drinking it. She doesn't have to follow suit, of course not, but given the fact that she also smokes, it just annoys me. She always nags at me to be healthier, yet smokes around me when she knows I've got allergies an such. I guess it just sort of amazed me that she'd go as far as making HER OWN SODA when she could just drink WATER, that's free. At least with CANS of it, you can return them for money (in some places)

I didn't say it was dumb because I drink water, it's dumb because it's dumb.

Here's the thing. People get addicted to caffeine. In fact, I believe it's MORE addictive than nicotine. You can actually go through caffeine withdrawal. If your mother drinks soda often enough, she may actually be addicted. So to you, it may seem like she doesn't have will power, but caffeine addiction is very real, just as is caffeine withdrawal (people that regularly take caffeine, like a coffee every morning) will actually start feeling nauseous/sick because they withdrew. Anyway, it's possible that your mother has an addiction to it, and so it's not quite as simple to just "stop drinking". But then again, if she's been drinking caffeine free soda all this time, then this probably isn't the case. All in all, I know it's irritating, but she wants what's best for you. So she'll tell you to take care of youself. But so many things are easier said than done. People KNOW what they have to do to be healthier, but it's not always the easiest task to do. If this is the case, your comment to her wasn't just about being "butthurt" as you put it, but it would have caused her even more disappointment/guilt in herself. She probably tried more than you realized, and your comment only makes her realize the lack of willpower she has. It's a pretty horrible feeling, especially when someone throws it back at you or doesn't even seem to acknowledge that you tried, you know? I don't know, it's just my thought. If she could stop drinking soda, it could definitely help her with her weight, but it won't be the only thing necessary to solve her problem. Her best bet, in my opinion, is not to go cold turkey... but to at least try to reduce the amount. If she wants to get something, buy those smaller cans... if she gets them at fast food places, ask the people to put in ALOT of ice... it'll force her to drink less, and that may be the start she needs.
