There are conflicting opinions on eye contact from what I can gather; I've learnt that it is both extremely rude and confrontational, yet connecting and necessary in various situations. (e.g applying for a job, recognising someone in the street, etc)

What is the true interpretation of eye contact? That is to say, what is your interpretation?

Reply in detail if you wish, I'm interested.

It is necessary but over done it can seem like you are trying to intimidate.  Like other human body language it is not black and white....

Good response, I like it. The suggestion of situational expression is pretty spot on now I think about it.

it's necessary. i always feel really uncomfortable when people i talk to aren't looking at me.
it's also really intimate, in the right situations.

There's no "both" option... Depending on the situation, it can be intended for either reason.

There's no "both" option... Depending on the situation, it can be intended for either reason.

Often when polls include a "both" opinion, even if an individual doesn't feel inclined to answer truthfully "both", there's a mental bias in someone's mind to click "both" as to make their decision seem "open-minded."

Do you see what I'm trying to say? I recognised this and hence put feel free to go into detail in a reply, so those who are truthfully believing "both" will explain their reasoning.

I was genuinely interested, and didn't want my results being messed up.

^.^ I am really interested in body language as a form of human communication, and also on the universality of it.  The other thing is depending on culture it could be different, so some cultures favor eye contact more the others...

I appreciate your genuine interest though...
