Probably some other subjective stuff but you kind of have to see how you feel for it. You really cannot get it on verizon, GSM≠CDMA :(

I'd have to disagree.  I have a Virizon phone and it roams in all sorts of big cities.  It roams in Dalas TX, Virginia Beach, etc. and my brother has an iPhone that doesnt roam anywhere.

My dad has one (2G) so I'll base most of my knowledge on that, along with some experience with my friend's 3G.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is.
Capacitive touchscreen is a nice novelty, but ultimately kind of sucks for anything but basic use and some games because you lack any kind of precision.
For the 2G model at least, the speakers are very quiet and borderline inaudible in normal social environments at lower battery levels - that includes both speech and ring tones.

No external unlock slider/button. You're forced to use the on screen option every single time unless you jailbreak it.

Can't tether it AT ALL without jailbreaking as far as I know.

All but latest model lack MMS texting - something pretty much every other phone on the market including cheap shit has had for years and years.

Like all Apple devices, music is only transferable through the massive headache known as iTunes.

No SD card slots - even though every other smart phone on the market seems to have a storage slot of some kind. Hint: they're useful. But of course Apple cares far too much about aesthetics to bother adding useful features like that.

Aforementioned lack of capacitive precision makes website navigation inferior to resistive touchscreen phones despite the zoom feature and other perks.

Inconsistent switch between portrait and landscape. Counter-intuitive and almost arbitrary rules governing which screens and menus will re-orient and which won't.

Lack of options - compared with other smart phones I've used, there was a serious lack of options and settings on the phone. This may have improved with later updates, but somehow I doubt it, this is Apple we're talking about after all.
