I am setting the upper temperature limit for my CPU that would be considered a dangerous level to reach.  This is because i play hardcore games on my PC and i would not like it to burn out.  The highest i've obseved it running at was 61 degrees celsius. Would 65 or 70 be considered a critical point which it would be dangerous?  I'm setting the program "real temp" on a shutdown on reacing this point so it has to be the very limit.  OH, i do not overclock my CPU, and i have a Intel Core Duo CPU at 2.667 GHz.

My dad had an issue on his gaming computer from overheating, so he rebuilt it with two fans and he hasn't had any trouble.

Also, 'hardcore' games don't require the best graphics card. You just have a shitty one.

Well from what I've heard Crysis was the most graphically inclined game to play on a CPU and well I played it at my friends house I wasn't too impressed. Its not hard at all to play hardcore gaming and they both done it under $1200 for each computer. Computer never gets hot and its only a Dell Studio with an Nvidia 9900 or whatever its just one of the best ones that cost a few hundred $'s

So from what I've seen you really don't need to do all that with your computer to play any game out there. They just over exaggerate so you will go out there and blow money on an overly powered computer for no reason.

Your CPU is running at 61°C and you're not overclocking?!?

Something is very very wrong I think.

Invest in a better cooler.  You can pick up a fairly decent LGA775 cooler for not much money.

Then apply a modest overclock and you'll see better results (hopefully).

You shouldn't be worrying about temperature when you're not overclocking.  That isn't normal.

i'm not going to buy anything new.  I have a gaming computer with gaming hardware in it.  I'm just using an extra precaution.  Whats the absolute limit that a CPU should be running at?

Whats the exact name of the CPU?

and if you want to run the game at max settings and a high resolution you will have to spend quite a bit, especially if it is pre built.

The CPU in my laptop has supposedly got to 90 C, according to the temperature monitor. It regularly gets to 80 C when I am encoding video or otherwise pushing the computer hard.

Who knows how accurate it is, but 70 C is not going to harm your CPU.

If you're using the stock heatsink, I'm afraid that you really should be buying another one. Intel's stock heatsink is a terrible design. Hell, the fan for the heatsink is mounted in an impractical way! $15 would get you a much better heatsink.

It reduces the lifespan of your CPU, running it at high temperatures like that.

As its a laptop, there is little I can do to make it run cooler, other than underclocking.

As long as it lasts another year or so, its all good anyway, I plan to replace it with something better by then.
