Disagree.

  Reform.

What would this reform consist of?

Why would your method be better than total legalization?

Total legalization could lead to governmental regulation of product.

Prices would go down due to competition, and large firms could mass produce weed at extremely low costs and the idea of private growers would be obsolete.

Hmm, I agree.

You're for decriminalization?

If we were to legalize smoking cannibis, there would be more idiots that smoke weed.

 Back it up, please.

1.People who smoke weed are idiots
2.Legalizing weed would mean more people who smoke weed.
3.More idiots.

Where's the accuracy in that?

"people who smoke weed are idiots".

Sweeping generalization, and flat out wrong.

People who are black are idiots.

See? I can do the same thing.

There are alot of african americans that do not score high enough on standardized tests.

However, people who regularly smoke pot don't score high on tests, go to nice colleges and get well paying jobs, they are on the low side of the specturm.

That's because it's illegal, and they usually run into legal trouble solely based on the fact that they use marijuana. That will directly affect all aspects of your life.

I think choosing to smoke pot regularly at the time being is rather stupid, because of the legal risk that you're taking. That isn't because of the substance itself, though- it's all thanks to our wonderful government. What do you know

Oh, and also- what zamrambo said.

Stats/facts to back up the fact that marijuana users don't do well on tests, please.

Fucking christ, you people are very stupid.

Maybe LW was the wrong place to attempt to start this debate.

Oh go write a song about it.

Too late. I already did. It's called "I Made A Debate While Stoned."

I don't even smoke pot. Stop assuming.

There is one reason. It lowers your sense of motivation, so if it was legalised there would be a lot of people smoking it, naturally. If nobody is motivated, nobody works hard. If nobody works hard, products aren't made, people don't make money and thus economy fails.

I seriously doubt it would go that far.

It's easier for most US public school children to get their hands on marijuana than alcohol.

I think a lot more people smoke weed than you guys think. I agree, total abuse of absolutely any intoxicating substance is bad, and will directly affect your life. You're always better off not using any substance. Enough people use it now that we can say we aren't going to start everyone smoking weed if we legalize it. If someone wants to smoke weed, they can get weed very easily (more easily than if it were legal) no matter the legality of it.

Who's going to just all of a sudden start smoking marijuana habitually because of the change of legalization of the substance?

Maybe the people who don't want to get caught with it because it is illegal? I think you underestimate human morals, because a high percentage of the would-be weed smokers aren't smoking yet because it's against the law.

Because the likelihood and penalty for being busted with the typical usage amount of weed is so high, right?

Disagree. It's an uncontrolled narcotic that impairs a person's ability to react normally to a given situation. Because it affects the brain, it drastically lowers your state of conciousness, impairing you for life.

Alcohol & weed both affect the brain, just in different ways. I've seen studies that show that while they do not impair you for life, they do take a toll on your brain (alcohol as well) and take years to fully recover. I believe the only reason why weed isn't legalized is because the government can't tax it. Weed is actually more useful than alcohol.

And that was the reasoning behind prohibition in the 1920's, and we all saw how that worked out.

here's a thought:: legalizing the production and sale of weed might possibly help our national debt situation.. think of how much revenue the government could gain just from the tax on that industry. people smoke it regardless.. why shouldn't uncle sam benefit..

also.. we could stop filling jail cells with harmless potheads and let our law enforcement focus on other, more serious problems..

also.. if you have to walk into a store and purchase it, presumably you have to show your id.. therefore making it harder for children to access.. the REALLY MOTIVATED ones will still get it.. but that goes for anything.. cigarettes, beer..

everyone wins...

for the record..  i don't smoke. never have. never will. just my opinion that weed doesn't cause any more damage than cigarettes or alcohol and both those are legal.. so why not? it just makes sense.

I'm not being a dick or anything, but where are the records of these studies?

The US government can't preform such scientific studies since the drug became illegal, and it's been so since the invention of MRI scanners and other medical equipment required to see the true effects of the brain.

There are natural THC receptors that are in our brain from birth. If those weren't in our brains naturally, weed wouldn't get people high. It's almost like we're evolutionarily fit to get high on THC. The human  brain is expected by very respected scientists actually deal with THC extremely well (not only the brain, but the entire human body). Such little, almost nonexistent harm is done by using safe THC ingestion methods (vaporization, oral ingestion, preset pills...) It's just so much damn safer than all other recreational drugs, and so much safer than prescribed pain killers and psychological boosters.

human morals are completely different to the likelihood of getting caught. Quite the opposite in fact. Read my post before you post something stupid mand make yourself look like an idiot.

There aren't that many "would-be" smokers, waiting for marijuana to be legalized.  The people that would be smoking pot, already are.  The chances of being caught and the penalties associated with being caught are quite low.
