I have some experience (I'm an IT assistant at my university and I have experience building and upgrading computers), but I'm not a Tech Support Leader (haven't been arsed to sign up).

Do I still count?

What do you want to use it for? Laptop/Desktop?

Most importantly, a realistic budget.

What sorts of things do you want to use your computer for? (As sam said) This question is important, because it's hard to give you suggestions as to what you may need in a computer without knowing what you want to actually do with it. Are you a gamer? What games? Do you have a lot of pictures? Are you a photoshopper? Do you download movies? How many? The amount of computer muscle you need really depends on how you use it. That's why what bighead1991 asked is so important.

What OS would you need? Well, that really depends as well. If you are big into graphic design, and media types of things maybe you'd want a mac? Those do run in a higher price range though. Microsoft has just released their new operating system, Windows 7, which has gained pretty nice reviews. 7 has many different levels ranging from starter to ultimate. Do you want windows XP mode to run older programs? You may need to get that with Professional or above.

Netbooks have gained popularity as well.  They are smaller, less powerful computers.  But they are portable. If you are a college student on the go, who doesn't have time for gaming, and just need to check your email every now and then, get a small, cheap, portable netbook. Around the 300 dollar range, and good for Web surfing, emailing, and some solitare, all with good battery life.

You will get a lot more and alot better replies if you listed your problem in this thread, People could read the thread and apply their knowledge to help you out. There is a lot of knowledgeable and intelligent people here who are not Tech SL's. They can also help you.
