I use my MacBooks Ethernet internet sharing to get on XBL.

That is the other way of doing it, forgot about that.  I had to do that for internet on my desktop when property managers decided we needed new carpet.  

I know how to do that from Windows 7, but haven't had to do it under any other OS.

It's a bitch to do under Mac OS, honestly. Gizmodo posted a great guide a while back that I bookmarked, and that did the trick.
