No, the QWERTY keyboard was designed because (as already stated) it helped prevent keys from jamming - it was NOT because it made you type slower. With an ABCD keyboard, frequently used letters were often next to each other and thus caused jamming. With a QWERTY keyboard those letters are still used with the same frequency. One does not make you type slower or faster. Familiarity of the keyboard creates one's speed on it. Have you ever typed on an ABCD keyboard? It's crazy hard - and you know why? Because we're used to the QWERTY key placement.
