Several main reasons, and I challenge anyone to offer an argument that debunks my views, as I've held this stance for several years, and not once have I been proven wrong. First, the common belief in arbeit macht frei, or in this context, that work will bring you happiness. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've heard from students, teachers, workers, everyone, that seem to think this actually works and think that if they put forth the effort now, they'll be rewarded later. It's an illusion, because your work does not end until you reach yours. People struggle through high school to struggle in college so that they may struggle at work to struggle to support themselves, and by the time you'll have reached the end of your struggles, your body will be well past its prime, and you will be spent. Society will have effectively leeched your strength to perpetuate itself. Don't believe me? Try social security. If you don't pay into it, the government will go after you, and in theory it's meant to ensure your security after you can no longer work, or have worked long enough. Yet do you realize you get a fraction of what you've been paying your entire working life? Working and working for a better life fucks you over, plain and simple. By the way, arbeit macht frei? That's what the Nazis posted above one of their deathcamps to motivate the Jews to work before they were gassed. Do you get the connection yet? Second, no matter how much you plan, you cannot create the future. From my own experience, I've seen people plan and plan then plan some more, only to either somewhere down the road have that plan changed by life if not eradicated completely, or they reach that goal only to find they are still miserable, or it is short lived, even taken away because of the world around them. What if after years and years of school, you're hit by a car the day you finally graduate? What if you're abstinent till marriage yet before you even find a partner you're diagnosed with a terminal illness? What if you do have your job, a house, and all of it, then it falls apart and you're left with nothing but your money? I've seen it happen too many times to think that all these people were exceptions, the simple fact of the matter is that you can't control what happens, people try because people can't bear not being in control, yet in the end we're all helpless in the face of the world around us, so what good will it do us to bust our asses just trying to feed into this whole charade that in the end wants to screw us over anyways? And finally, what is the point? People want big houses, big cars, high paying jobs, all that, but what's it for? Is that lexus going to comfort you when your sister is in rehab again? Will that 1.3 million dollar house be at your side in your final moments? No, they are just things. Am I saying don't try? Just fuck it all and die in a corner? No and yes. Have a general direction, yeah I want to go to college and get a job, and what happens, happens. Don't plan it, don't push yourself in hopes for the future, and most importantly, NEVER let the future take priority over whats important now. For me, the answer is, and always will be, people. Live for the moment, do what it takes to make you happy, but for Christ's sake don't live for shit you don't need and for what people tell you to live for. I do the things I do because I want to. I want an education and a job for a loved one and hopefully a family someday, but without them, without people I care about, I'm perfectly content with living in a shack, as long as I have people to share my life with. Without people, no matter what your achievements, stuff, or effort, you are nothing.

That is an extremely pessimistic way of looking at society. And its your opinion.

Actually it's quite realistic. Life is constantly changing, and to try and find instability is both fruitless and naive.

I'm not talking about over-achievers. What I'm saying is, there's nothing wrong with trying to live your life to the fullest. Frankly, going to University isn't overachieving anymore, infact you could argue that not going to post secondary would be underachieving now because of how intelligent people naturally are now. I'm not sure how its retarded to go to school and try have fun every day and raise a nice family. Remember, I said trophy wife in the eyes of the beholder, not as a prize thing. My gf would be a trophy wife in my eyes. Sure, I could have loads of fun living in an apartment all my life with her. Doesn't mean I have to. Its nice to enjoy things you've actually earned, and yes, work DOES provide happiness for a LOT of people. Work is a tool for me to relax sometimes, and clear my mind. Its very rewarding. And people who claim that its not rewarding, an honest days work, and that living your life to the fullest is just bullshit, are generally people who have given up on life and are just afraid or unequipped to face the challenges of the average every day life. Just because you see some success, doesn't mean you've lost the meaning to life. In fact enjoying your work so much actually GIVES you a meaning of life. to further yourself, to reach your potential. In fact I would argue that when you're handed everything your whole life, or when you have no ambition at all(as per your example) that it would be more likely for you to go mad or become an alcoholic and become abusive, because you're taking your lack of meaning out on those around you.

But I'm not arguing that you do absolutely nothing, I'm saying that the future, the goals you're attempting to reach, should always be second to the present and what's beset for you now. Overachievers are the polar opposite of myself simply because the future is the only goal. To put it simply, go to university and get an education, but never let it dictate your actions, because, to make an analogy, it's like being on a road. There's no point to doing nothing and sitting there, so get up and start walking in a direction for the sake of moving, but don't live for the destination.
