How hard is it for somewhat average out of state students to gain acceptance there?

I have a 4.2 GPA and will take AP exams this year for Biology, Environmental Science, English Lit, & Studio Art. My SAT scores, are pretty average. Math: 560, CR: 600, Writing: 580. I took the ACT but, haven't gotten my scores back yet. I'm also a duel-enrolled student at a local college in my city.

UCSB is my first choice, so hopefully I get in. I want to major in marine bio & environmental science with a minor in French.

Hmm, well if You're a Californian resident. Then you'll have absolutely NO problem getting in.

Yeah, out of state is a lot harder. It's a very school. I'm applying there as well but my first choice is UC Santa Cruz even though UCSB is a better school. I just can't handle the mass amounts of partying and drinking all the time in Santa Barbara. It's great to visit friends for weekends, but the surfing and constant drinking don't bode well for trying to get a degree (that's for me).

Many people balance that lifestyle fine and do just well.. :O

We have a guy on our swim team who transferred to my school from Santa Cruz. First thing he asked me was if I wanted to blaze with him before class. hahaha. But ya, I'm definitely considering SC. But SD is definitely my first choice.

haha. Yeah, Santa Cruz is considered a "stoner" school. From what I hear though, the marijuana makes a way more "relaxed" place to be for college. I dont mind the smoking that much, because every time I smoke I just want to eat, watch movies or play video games. That's more my style rather than drinking at parties and trying to hook up with chicks.

That being said, I think my lifestyle would coincide with that of Santa Cruz.

UC San diego is a great school. I live an hour away. (in orange county) Highly ranked, a lot of intellectual people and a great school. I love San Diego, it's one of my favorite cities. The only negative I have is that it's close to the mexican border (10 miles from downtown San Diego) which makes it very enticing to go, however it's complete opposite of San Diego and will make you want to get far away.

I've taken day trips to Tijuana and that has been some of my biggest regrets in my life haha.. Talk about a culture and life shock. With my very own eyes, the one time I went, I saw 4 car accidents, 3 cars being broken into and mass amounts of homeless and drug dealers just on the corners. This was not even during the time of all the recent killings over drug wars.. I can only imagine what Tijuana (border town) is today.

Anyways, you will have fun at San Diego... Good luck (sorry for the small rant) HAHA

oh now san diego isn't that scary. i'm from the u.s. side of the border myself, though i've never ventured out into tijuana. yea it's a scary place there. know why? because the pri lost power(/decentralization of the mexican government). and because of nafta.

For any state school, it's more difficult to get in as an OOS applicant. Go for it. Your grades seem good and I would wait to see what you get on your ACTs before you submit test scores. What are your extra curricular activities like?
