Divided.

With all the problems we have nowadays there's always more than one solution per problem and because of that people get their panties in a bunch.

Make us closer.
Raise alert levels.
Send the country into uproar.
New stereotype that all Middle-Easter people are terrorists.
Made us hate minorities more.
Got George W. Bush elected to another pathetic 4 years.

We were very united at one time. It was when I first moved here. After that some chose to make it divisive. It is a pity.

Honestly I think the attacks caused us to be more divided than united in the long one, though that was the fault of multiple factors.

Well during the first few months after 9/11, everyone was freakingly all "omg I don't know you but I still love you fellow American dude"
After a while, everyone started having different opinions on the war on terror, and more especially, the war in iraq, so it's kind of made us divided.

They do initially because the nation rallies around a common cause (freedom, patriotism, etc.) but eventually I think those feelings dissolve into argument and turmoil as people try to point fingers at one another, blaming authority figures and a lack of action for the problem itself.

Overall, it absolutely divided the people. Prejudices were inspired based upon ridiculous ideas and are now perpetuated, making it near impossible for any real progress to be made.

As a New Yorker, I watched a city come together in the most astounding way. People spent days at ground zero, searching through tons and tons of rubble with the slim hope of finding survivors, with the rescue efforts starting immediately after the fall of the second tower. Firefighters and police officers, along with other volunteers returned without going so far as to alert their families they were alright, because they knew that any time they wasted meant less of a chance for the survivors.

I still completely stuns me to think about the reactions of the people here. That people, so suddenly vulnerable and terrified as we were, were so willing to risk themselves to do everything they could to help other people is really beyond anything I could have ever imagined. There is certainly division among the people here, and I really believe it's that way all over America, but the attacks inspired something amazing from the people who it impacted the most directly.

Americans are historically resilient and will arise to meet any threat to their country, freedom, democracy and lives.  I don't think terrorism is much of a topic of conversation among Americans as it has been 8 years since it occurred.

However, the way that the U.S. responded to terrorism violates everything that the country has stood for.  When you have irrational and stupid leaders in a time of crisis anything can happen and it did.  The response to Afghanistan, Taliban and Al Queda was appropriate.  However, when the U.S. invaded Iraq and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people for no valid reasons the U.S. became a country committing terrorists acts.  For this reason I believe Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should be held accountable for war crimes based on the lies and distortions they made to justify the invasion.  Stupid people make stupid decisions.

I am an American and I love my country but what Bush and his band of rogues did to this country made me ashamed of being an American.  Hopefully it is past us. Getting out from under the expense and damage is going to be a huge challenge.
