What is your opinion on Paid Maternity Leave, Do you think it should be available for all pregnant mothers or not?

I personally think that there should not be paid maternity leave, It could be taken advantage of very easily. I would assume that some people would have kid after kid and just live at home for most of their life (on PML).

What are your opinions on this?

i definitely support paid maternity leave, but it should only be available for a limited amount of time surrounding the birth.

if perhaps they have a certain household income then maybe not

It should be there in order to support mothers.  As people have a right to reproduce, there should be no limit on how many times a woman can take maternity leave either.

The only limit I believe should be in place is how long. And I say that should be either 6 or 8 months.

I will get paid maternity leave from my job when I have a child, but it will only allow me a certain amount of time.  It's not like I can stay out for as long as I want, and it is being paid by my employer, so he really should be the only one who cares about whether or not I am paid for it, which I believe if you are a full time employee that you are required to pay your workers maternity leave.

It should be up to the employer.

I agree. I think the mother should definitely be allowed time off at the least.

If you're not salary, it complicates things though. Salary employees get paid the same amount regardless of the hours they work. Hourly employees are paid by the hour. If you're payed by the hour, and need time off, it can get complicated trying to get PAID time off.

Either way, I think its perfectly acceptable, especially since the first few weeks are critical bonding time between the parents and the baby.

As for it being taken advantage easily, that's why there's a time limit on it.

I know a lady who is a teacher and she is on (unpaid) maternity leave for 7 years. Is this kind of thing possible where paid maternity leave is possible?

Also, Who pays for paid maternity leave? The employer or the government?

Either the employer or the insurance company contracted by the employer.

i think usually the government pays 60% and your employer tops up the other 40% of your normal wages

Well that is really stupid. The government should pay 100% of it. Why would the employer be responsible for someones baby? The employer hires you to work, Not to look after your kid.

Why should the government be responsible?

The government does not pay maternity leave unless you work for the government, and even then it's the health insurance company that actually pays.

I ssupport it but not people who take advantage of it like they get a job and then a week later give birth with no warning to the employers so then they have to go off and find someone to fill the space again AND have to pay someone else. It's fucking bullshit how many teachers i've seen do that.
