I think if you're using the rhythm method of contraception then having sex on your period is fine.

The danger zone is from about 3-4 days after your period until the start of your next period.

But the exact timing of ovulation presumably varies from girl to girl so be careful.

Apparently your body temperature goes up when you ovulate so you could keep track of your cycle using this method if you wanted to.

This method of "contraception" doesn't work.

It's massively risky, yes.  I read somewhere that sperm cells survived inside a girl for eight days before she ovulated and then got pregnant.

Just use a condom or get the pill or something :)

It's actually highly unlikely. You'd have to have a very short menstrual cycle, which is the time from the first day of one period to the first day of the next period, or a tendency to have long periods. This would bring the time of ovulation closer to the time when you would start bleeding.
