same goes with movies where the main character is granted wishes ie bedazzled etc etc

Well yeah but in Bedazzled everything the guy wished for went horribly wrong.
If he wished for world peace we'd get it, but then aliens would probably invade and kill us all. Wish for a cure for cancer, the cure would probably end up being freshly drawn baby blood.
