There are actually several cultures that do that, and it's not JUST in Africa.

You have the reason's behind why it's done somewhat backwards. In these cultures it's believed that it will inhibit sexual desires, which in turn will keep them pure (discouraging sex).

It has nothing to do with being a slut or lesbian, and its purely cultural values.

There was an article in Seventeen Magazine on this a few months ago.

Not exactly, no. Circumcision is referring to the removal of the foreskin. Since girls essentially don't have that, "female circumcision" isn't exactly possible.

It was actually in the "Your Life" section, which tells REAL stories, from people who have actually been through it. The girl they interviewed had been through it. They explicitly quote in these articles, they don't dumb them down or minimize them. If you ask me, that's not the "sweet" version. The whole point of that section is to make people aware of things like that.

Those were my words. INHIBIT sexual desires, DISCOURAGE sex. You picked out the one piece, where I mentioned purity, and took it much too literally. I was intending it as the OPPOSITE of promiscuity, that was my entire point. DISCOURAGES sex in general.

However, preventing someone from being a lesbian, although of "benefit" as part of it, is not the original intent.

Slut and promiscuity aren't what I consider interchangeable. Slut is rude, and downright insulting. Promiscuity isn't something that's necessarily GOOD, but it's not bluntly rude to the same degree.

I don't understand exactly what you said in the first part, but my point was that the intent of why some cultures do that is different from what you originally said.
