First of all, why do you drink? Is it because you're depressed? Or has it just become such a habit that you can't stop? Perhaps you should look into going to a support group or ringing some sort of hotline, and asking for their advice.

So basically it's a stress reliever/comfort. You need to find something else to occupy yourself with. What are you into? Apart from alcohol... Maybe you could join a gym or some sort of sports club. It's healthy and a great stress reliever.

You talk about embarrassment in terms of getting help....and use as a reason for not doing so. I think you kind of need to look at the bigger picture here. If you have a drinking problem, what's ultimately going to be more embarrassing? You asking for help from someone who can help with this kind of thing...or things getting worse-to the point where you can't hide your problem anymore? I'm not you, but I'd definitely pick the latter. Short term embarrassment could save you some major problems and a heck of a lot more embarrassment in the future. Get this taken care of now, not later.
The bottom line is you know that this isn't healthy, and you know that this isn't what you want to keep doing. You've got to find a way to relieve that stress in a way that isn't completely self-destructive. I can't really tell you what that is without knowing more about you...but I can tell you that there are resources that you can utilize that will help you figure that out. If you're on a college campus there is almost definitely some sort of counseling center that you could check into.

I have to agree with greatescape on this one.
I'm only a sophomore at my university, and I've already seen several of my friends fall into bad habits that are tough to break. I mean, I love to drink on the weekends, at a party or whatever, but if you're drinking alone consistently, you might have a really hard time stopping.
