My girlfriend and I are taking a break because she feels as if she has too many problems to take care of and that it's not fair to me. I don't like it. I hate not being able to talk to her. Not being able to hear her voice. Frankly, if someone is willing to be there despite your problems, then don't stop yourself from dating.

I've actually met very interesting people through websites like OKCupid. Granted, I generally look for people who are polyamorous - I can relent on that requirement for friends to an extent (seeing as I prefer to blur/remove lines between friendship and 'relationships'), but for the most part that's what I'm looking for.
Generally speaking, you aren't going to know most polyamorous people are such without talking to them first, so web-based services are often a good option for people like me.
